What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Usually, upgrading is cheaper when one compatible part fixes the actual problem; building or buying new is more compelling when several core components need replacement. There is no universal price winner: compare the full cost of the upgrade—including supporting parts and labor—with a new PC that meets the same needs in your country. The answer depends on your PC, workload, local prices, and how long you need the result to last.
Start by diagnosing what needs to improve
Choose a change based on the bottleneck, not the computer’s age alone. If a PC takes a long time to boot and still uses a mechanical hard drive, storage may be the problem. For gaming, determine whether the GPU, CPU, or RAM is limiting performance before buying a graphics card. An upgrade that does not address the constraint may cost money without delivering the improvement you want.
PCWorld’s upgrade-or-buy guide outlines targeted upgrades and the compatibility checks they require. It is useful for general decision-making, not as a source of current component prices.
Check compatibility before pricing an upgrade
Record the PC or motherboard model and check the specific parts you plan to keep and replace. A seemingly simple upgrade can become a larger project if the new component does not fit or work with the existing system.

- Memory: Check the supported DDR type and speed, maximum capacity, current configuration, and available slots.
- Storage: Confirm whether the board supports the drive’s interface, such as SATA or NVMe, and whether the drive will fit the available bay or slot. An older PC may support one interface but not the other.
- Graphics card: Check case clearance, power-supply capacity and connectors, and PCIe support. Consider whether the CPU can keep up with the card.
- Processor: Check the motherboard’s supported CPU list, socket, BIOS support, and cooling requirements. A replacement processor that is not supported can require a motherboard change—and possibly new memory.
These checks determine whether the price is really for one component or for a chain of changes.
Compare the complete cost of each route
Price an upgrade as an installed, working system—not as the price of its headline part. Include any motherboard, RAM, power supply, cooling, storage, operating-system or setup costs, and labor the upgrade requires. Then compare that total with a new PC that can handle the same workload at the performance level you want. Count existing parts you can reuse only if they are compatible and suitable.

- Intel Core i7-7700 3.6GHz, Turbo up to 4.2 Ghz, 64 bit Quad-Core Processor.
- 512G NVME SSD, 16GB DDR4 Memory, Intel HD Graphics 630.
- Slim/Small form factor (SFF), Wired Black Keyboard and Mouse included.
- Windows 11 Professional (64-bit).
Compare the options across the factors that affect your outcome:
- Full installed cost: Include required supporting parts and labor on both sides.
- Workload performance: Ask whether the upgrade or replacement will deliver the improvement you actually need.
- Compatibility risk: An upgrade depends on the old platform and retained parts working with the new component.
- Useful life and upgrade path: A low-cost fix may extend an aging platform without making it suitable for your next workload.
- Warranty and setup effort: Weigh the support offered with a new PC against the work involved in upgrading or building.
- Reusable parts: Include only components that can carry over and remain fit for purpose.
Do not compare the price of a single graphics card with the price of a complete PC. The meaningful comparison is between two complete routes to a similar result.

When a targeted upgrade can make sense
Replacing an HDD with an SSD
If the PC boots from a mechanical hard drive, an SSD may improve startup and system operations, as PCWorld describes. Confirm that the motherboard supports the chosen SATA or NVMe interface before buying. Replacing storage alone is not a reason to expect higher gaming frame rates.
Adding or replacing RAM
More memory may help when RAM is the constraint, provided the motherboard supports the capacity and modules you choose. Verify the DDR type, supported speed, existing configuration, and free slots first.

Upgrading the graphics card
A graphics-card upgrade is worth considering when GPU performance is the bottleneck and the CPU can keep up. Check the power supply’s capacity and connectors and the card’s fit in the case. If the change also requires a new power supply or case, include those costs before deciding.
Upgrading the CPU
First establish that the CPU is limiting the work you do. Then check for a useful supported processor and confirm socket, BIOS, and cooling requirements. If the motherboard cannot support a suitable CPU, the upgrade may turn into a platform replacement involving more parts.

When a new PC deserves a serious comparison
Price a replacement when several core parts are obsolete or incompatible, a CPU change forces a platform change, or an upgrade needs additional components such as a power supply or case. A replacement is also worth comparing if the upgraded system still will not meet your software or workload needs.
Decide whether the relevant alternative is a prebuilt PC or a self-build. A new system can offer a warranty and newer interfaces, but those benefits do not by themselves prove it is cheaper. TechRadar’s 2026 gaming-PC guide reports that component-price increases have made building from scratch less cost-effective in the gaming-PC market it covers. That is a time-sensitive observation about that market, not evidence that every prebuilt is better value or that replacing an old PC always beats upgrading it.
Use the “half the price” rule cautiously
Sebastian Schenzinger, a PCWorld contributor, gives this editorial heuristic: “If you have to invest more than half the money you would have spent on a new PC for an upgrade, buying a new one is usually the more sensible solution in the long run.” Treat it as a prompt to compare the options, not a universal break-even formula. Local taxes, used-part prices, labor, Windows compatibility, reusable components, and the quality of the new PC can all change the result.
Price the options in your local market
There is no established universal current price winner for upgrading an unspecified old PC versus building a new one. Component prices and availability vary by country and change over time, and the comparison depends on the existing machine and the replacement target. Get current local prices for equivalent outcomes before choosing. The PCWorld guide supports the general upgrade logic; its historical product prices are not current quotes.
