Yes. Google ended production of Chromecast in 2024, and remaining stock was available only while supplies lasted. That does not mean existing Chromecast devices stopped working: Google said its support policy for current owners would not change, while noting continued software and security updates for its latest devices.
What happened to Chromecast?
On August 6, 2024, Google announced that it was ending Chromecast production after 11 years. The announcement said new devices would be available only while remaining supplies lasted; it did not promise that stock would remain available in any particular region or for any set period. Google reported that more than 100 million Chromecast devices had been sold over those 11 years, a company-reported figure rather than an independently verified market total. Google’s announcement was authored by Majd Bakar, then vice president of engineering for Health & Home.
Google named Google TV Streamer as Chromecast’s successor. It carries forward core Chromecast features in a faster, more premium 4K device, but it is a set-top-style unit rather than the small HDMI dongle associated with older Chromecast models. Google announced a US launch price of $99.99 in August 2024; that historical launch price is not a current price quote.
Will an existing Chromecast still work?
Google said the end of production would not change its support policy for existing Chromecast devices. It also said it would continue providing software and security updates for the latest devices. The announcement did not specify a support end date, nor does its wording promise updates indefinitely for every Chromecast model.

How to choose a replacement for your TV
Check the TV’s resolution and format support
A 4K player is most useful with a 4K television. Google recommends a 4K TV for the best Google TV Streamer experience. HDR and audio features such as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos also depend on the TV, sound system, and content supporting those formats; a device’s specification alone does not guarantee that a full setup will use them.

Google TV Streamer is the direct successor Google named. Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max are options for readers who would rather use Roku or Fire TV. Roku lists compatibility with Google Home, Alexa, and Apple HomeKit/AirPlay, but that compatibility does not make its interface or casting behavior the same as Chromecast.

Match the hardware to your setup
Roku and Fire TV offer compact HDMI-stick designs; Google TV Streamer uses a set-top form and has an Ethernet port, according to Google’s 2024 announcement. If you rely on wired networking, check the connection options for the exact device and your home setup. If you prefer a low-profile stick, the two stick-style alternatives may fit better.
Check current price and availability
