Dell PowerScale is worth evaluating if your on-premises AI environment needs a shared, scalable file platform for large and growing unstructured datasets. Its OneFS scale-out NAS architecture, global namespace, and documented support for NFS, SMB, HDFS, and GPU data-path technologies are relevant to some AI pipelines. Those capabilities do not make it the right choice for every project: fit depends on your access pattern, workload performance, GPU and network configuration, resilience needs, operating capacity, and lifecycle cost.

What PowerScale is—and what that means for AI

PowerScale is Dell’s scale-out NAS portfolio, powered by OneFS. Dell describes a cluster of peer nodes running a distributed file system: nodes contribute resources as the cluster expands, and OneFS redistributes content. The platform provides a global namespace and centralized management, allowing multiple clients and workflows to work with a shared file estate.

For AI, that architecture is most relevant when data is stored as files and needs to be shared across systems or stages of a pipeline. Dell documents NFS, SMB, and HDFS access, and its AI materials discuss NVIDIA GPUDirect Storage and RDMA. The exact features available—and their performance—depend on the selected hardware, software, and configuration. Verify support for the complete deployment rather than assuming a technology named in an architecture overview applies to every cluster.

When PowerScale is a strong candidate

  • Your AI data is file-oriented. Examples include shared collections of images, video, documents, or other unstructured data.
  • Several systems or workflows need common access. A shared file platform may suit an estate where data is not isolated to one server or one pipeline stage.
  • You expect the data estate to grow. PowerScale is designed to expand by adding nodes under a shared namespace; assess whether your capacity and performance needs can be met as the cluster grows.
  • AI must coexist with enterprise file workloads. A common data estate may be useful if you want to manage AI data alongside other file services rather than create a separate storage island.
  • You can justify enterprise infrastructure and its operations. The decision should account for deployment, support, administration, and lifecycle planning—not just storage capacity.

Dell lists PowerScale in AI and NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD solution materials and describes a Dell/NVIDIA generative AI model-training reference design. Treat those as reasons to investigate validated configurations, not as proof that a reference design still matches your hardware, software, network, or workload.

When to look harder at other storage approaches

PowerScale may be more infrastructure than a small or early-stage project needs if its dataset is limited, user count is low, throughput requirements are modest, or no shared enterprise file platform is required. The available material does not establish a universal minimum scale or a cost break-even point.

It may also be a poor architectural match when the dominant requirement is block-oriented transactional data, a specialized parallel-filesystem pattern, or object-first retention rather than shared NAS access. These are architecture questions, not a cross-vendor ranking: the available evidence does not establish a universal winner or an apples-to-apples comparison with competing systems.

How to choose among PowerScale node families

Dell’s current product positioning differentiates all-flash node families by performance and workload. It describes F710 as suited to high-performance AI and GPU-intensive work, and F910 as aimed at the most demanding enterprise applications and large-scale analytics. Dell’s product FAQ also frames the choice as F210, F710, or F910; the material here does not provide comparable F210 positioning or enough specifications to select a model by itself.

Node family Dell’s stated positioning What to verify
F210 Not stated in the cited product material summarized here. Confirm current specifications, intended workload, supported OneFS release, and compatibility in Dell’s applicable planning and support guides.
F710 High-performance AI and GPU-intensive work. Validate the full workload and configuration; the positioning is not a sizing recommendation or performance guarantee.
F910 The most demanding enterprise applications and large-scale analytics. Check whether its characteristics match your workload and requirements; confirm support and sizing for the selected release.

These are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Select a node family and cluster size only after measuring the workload and checking current compatibility and planning guidance for the precise models and OneFS release.

What performance claims do—and do not—tell you

Dell publishes high throughput figures, but each is tied to a particular configuration, test, or comparison. They can help define questions for a proof of concept; they are not forecasts for an unspecified deployment.

Dell-published claim Qualification
Up to 35 GB/s read throughput per node Dell’s current product page ties this to a next-generation PowerScale platform based on Dell PowerEdge R7725xd with OneFS 9.15 or later. Dell cautions that results vary with configuration, deployment model, workload, and environment.
Up to 8× greater cluster throughput than traditional flash-only competitors Dell’s September 2024 claim is based on PowerScale F710 maximum cluster throughput running NFS 4.2; Dell says actual results may vary.
Up to 3× write throughput per rack unit versus a closest flash-only competitor Dell’s May 2024 claim identifies internal testing that compared write throughput per node using FIO over a remote file system; Dell says actual performance may vary.

These are Dell claims, not independent results for your workload. Dell’s current product page also reports 25,000+ global customers and 1,500+ customers running GPU workloads; those are vendor-reported counts, not independent adoption statistics. No independent, apples-to-apples PowerScale benchmark or market-wide adoption statistic is established here.

Test the complete AI data path before sizing

A GPU-compatible storage path does not prove that storage is the bottleneck, nor that changing storage will improve model quality. Benchmark the pipeline with representative data, clients, and network conditions. Include the operations that matter for your use case:

  • Training: measure sustained dataset reads, repeat reads, checkpoint writes, and restart behavior after an interruption.
  • Inference or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): measure the real data-preparation and retrieval path, including concurrency and metadata behavior.
  • Across both: test file-size distribution, metadata activity, client concurrency, read/write mix, and the network and server configuration you intend to deploy.

Agree on a proof-of-concept test plan before treating a published figure or reference design as a deployment forecast. Measure the result against your own performance and recovery requirements.

Decision area Questions to answer
Data access pattern Do applications need shared file protocols, object access, or block access? Which interfaces—such as NFS, SMB, or HDFS—are actually required?
Scale and growth What are current usable data, ingest rate, retention period, and expected growth? Must capacity and performance expand together?
Workload performance What are the sustained read and checkpoint-write targets? How do small files, metadata activity, concurrency, repeat reads, and recovery after interruption affect results?
GPU and network integration Is the exact server, GPU, driver, OneFS release, RDMA or GPUDirect path, and switch configuration validated for this deployment?
Protection and operations What availability, snapshot, backup, recovery-objective, security, and administration requirements apply? Does the team have the experience to operate the platform?
Lifecycle economics What will acquisition and support, power, rack space, networking, software, backup, migration, and ongoing operations cost over the planning period?

Check current OneFS documentation before committing

Dell’s documentation hubs list OneFS 9.14.0.0 resources for compatibility, node planning, administration, technical specifications, security, and backup; that hub was last modified on 13 May 2026. Dell’s OneFS 9.13.0.0 hub was last modified on 29 July 2026. A hub’s modification date does not establish which release or patch is appropriate or supported for a particular cluster.

Before purchase or deployment, confirm the currently supported OneFS release, hardware compatibility, feature prerequisites, and upgrade path in the Dell guides that apply to your selected nodes and configuration.

How much weight should a customer endorsement carry?

Dell’s product page attributes this endorsement to Takashi Kanai, Deputy Chief of SUBARU Lab, Subaru Corporation: “Dell PowerScale enables us to unlock the full potential of AI by providing the scalability, performance, and reliability needed for our teams to innovate efficiently and optimize the total cost of ownership.” It is a customer statement hosted by Dell, not an independently audited performance result; it cannot establish how the platform will perform or what it will cost for a different workload.
