DeepSeek is not automatically safe or unsafe for every use. Its consumer privacy policy, updated February 10, 2026, says it collects prompts and account and usage information, may use personal data to improve services and train technology, and processes and stores personal data in China. DeepSeek says it uses commercially reasonable security safeguards, but that is the company’s disclosure—not an independent security audit. Avoid submitting sensitive or confidential information, and check which DeepSeek service and provider you are using.
What data does DeepSeek collect?
DeepSeek’s consumer privacy policy lists information users provide and data collected from their devices and use of the service. The exact details can vary by product context; for example, the policy describes payment and cookie collection in particular contexts, so those details should not be assumed to apply identically to every DeepSeek service.
- Account details: username, email address or telephone number, and password.
- Content you submit: text and voice input, prompts, uploaded files, photos, feedback, and chat history.
- Device and network information: device model, operating system, IP address, identifiers, system language, diagnostic and performance logs, and service-use logs.
- Approximate location: the policy says DeepSeek may derive it from your IP address.
These categories are described in DeepSeek’s consumer privacy policy, last updated February 10, 2026.
Does DeepSeek use chats to train its models?
DeepSeek’s policy says it uses personal data to improve and develop its services and to train and improve technology, including machine-learning models and algorithms. That describes a stated purpose; it does not establish that every individual chat is used for training. The reviewed policy also does not establish a service-wide opt-out mechanism or the effect of any particular setting.

Does DeepSeek send or store data in China?
Yes, according to DeepSeek’s consumer privacy policy: “To provide you with our services, we directly collect, process and store your Personal Data in People’s Republic of China.” The policy also says data may be stored on a server outside your country and that safeguards will be used where required by applicable law. This is what the policy says; it is not an independent verification of the service’s network traffic or storage systems.
How secure is DeepSeek?
DeepSeek says it maintains “commercially reasonable technical, administrative, and physical security measures” to protect personal data and regularly reviews them. Its policy also warns that internet or email transmission is never fully secure or error free. These are company statements, not a substitute for independent evidence: the reviewed materials do not provide a current independent audit of the consumer service.
Rank #2
How long does DeepSeek keep information?
The policy does not give one fixed deletion deadline. It says retention depends on factors such as the amount, type, and sensitivity of information, the purpose of processing, and legal requirements. It gives account data, input, and payment data kept while an account exists as an example, and says information may also be retained for legal obligations, legitimate business interests, or claims.
Is DeepSeek safe for sensitive or work information?
DeepSeek says its services are not designed or intended to process sensitive personal data and advises users not to provide it. As a practical rule, do not enter passwords, authentication secrets, confidential workplace documents, customer records, or sensitive personal information unless you and, where relevant, your organization have reviewed the applicable service terms and privacy requirements.

Does DeepSeek’s consumer policy cover apps built with its API?
No. DeepSeek’s consumer policy says processing by downstream systems or applications developed by other developers using open-platform services is outside the scope of that policy. The Open Platform terms place responsibilities on developers serving the public, including disclosing their own personal-information processing rules, having consent or another legal basis, handling rights requests, and establishing organizational and technical security measures. If you use a third-party app powered by DeepSeek, review that app developer’s privacy policy as well as DeepSeek’s.
What changes with DeepSeek Harness and a custom model?
DeepSeek’s Harness privacy policy, last updated September 20, 2026, distinguishes official model services from custom-model use. In custom-model mode, a user configures another large-model API and inputs go directly to that provider; according to the policy, the provider’s own policy governs that processing, and Harness does not store or process the input and output on its server in that scenario. This statement is specific to Harness custom-model mode, not the consumer chatbot or official DeepSeek model services.
Rank #4
The Harness policy also advises users to assess third-party plugins, MCP servers, skills, hooks, and dependencies. Those components can introduce separate providers and handling practices, so consider them as part of the setup rather than assuming the custom-model distinction covers every integration.
Have governments restricted DeepSeek?
Authorities in several places took actions in 2025, but the actions were jurisdiction-specific and arose from different processes. They do not establish a universal ban, a current restriction in every location, or proof of a technical compromise.

Make the decision based on the exact service and the sensitivity of the information—not on a broad “safe” or “unsafe” label. Before using it, check:
Quick Recap
- Whether you are using DeepSeek’s consumer service, an Open Platform integration, a third-party application, or Harness custom-model mode.
- Which provider receives your prompts, files, and other inputs, and what that provider’s policy says about use and storage.
- Whether your organization permits the service and whether the information you plan to enter is allowed to leave your systems.
- What the relevant policy says about model improvement, retention, deletion, and user rights.
- Whether any local or organizational restriction applies; dated government actions in other places do not answer that question for you.
