Eligible Free users can choose an ad-free option at no cost, though it comes with lower usage limits and reduced access to some features. Plus is listed at $20 per month in the United States, billed monthly, and is more compelling if you also use its expanded model and tool access.
Does ChatGPT Plus show ads?
No. OpenAI says Plus accounts will not have ads. Its Help Center says ads may appear for eligible Free and Go accounts in regions included in the rollout, but availability varies by account and location. OpenAI’s January 16, 2026 announcement also said it would offer a way to use ChatGPT without ads, including a paid ad-free tier.
OpenAI says ads are labeled as sponsored and displayed separately from ChatGPT’s response, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter answers. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its product design and policies, not independent audit findings. The company says ad relevance may use conversation context and, when personalization is enabled, selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience. It says advertisers do not receive chats, chat history, memories, identifying details, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information; during the early test, they receive aggregated reporting such as views and clicks. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT Help Center article has current rollout and policy details.
Can you use ChatGPT without ads for free?
Some eligible Free users can select an Ads-Free option. It removes ads without a subscription, but OpenAI describes it as having fewer messages per day and less access to features, with image generation and Deep Research among the examples of tools that may be unavailable. This option is not available to every user or region.

OpenAI began testing ads in the United States on February 9, 2026, with a gradual rollout to eligible Free and Go users in select regions. An August 11, 2026 update said the pilot had expanded to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea, with further expansion planned. That list is not a guarantee of current availability in any particular account; check the options shown in ChatGPT. OpenAI’s ads testing update describes the pilot.

How do the ad-free choices compare?
| Choice | Ads | Cost | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free with ads | May show ads if your account and region are eligible | Free | More access than the Ads-Free Free option; OpenAI says ads may appear below a response. |
| Free Ads-Free | No ads | Free | Lower usage limits and reduced access to some features; availability varies. |
| Plus | No ads, according to OpenAI | $20/month, billed monthly, per OpenAI’s U.S. Help Center listing | Broader model and tool access than Free, subject to limits and availability that can change. |
How much does ChatGPT Plus cost, and what else do you get?
OpenAI’s Help Center lists Plus at $20 per month, billed monthly. That is the listed price in the United States; check the price shown at checkout because region, taxes, and purchasing platform may affect the amount you pay. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus Help Center article lists plan details.
Ad removal is only one part of the subscription. OpenAI lists priority access during high traffic, higher model limits, available advanced reasoning options, faster replies, voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and analysis, and Deep Research where available. Model choices, limits, and feature availability can change, so Plus should not be treated as unlimited access to every tool.

When is Plus worth paying for just to avoid ads?
If avoiding ads is your only goal, try the free Ads-Free option first if it appears in your account and its lower limits and feature restrictions work for you. Paying for Plus solely to remove ads is harder to justify when a no-cost ad-free option is available to you.
Plus is more likely to be worth the monthly cost if you would also benefit from its broader model and tool access, higher limits, priority access, or faster replies—or if Ads-Free Free’s reduced limits and feature access would interfere with how you use ChatGPT. There is no universal usage threshold or financial break-even point: the value depends on which features you use and how much the Free restrictions matter to you. OpenAI’s January 16, 2026 announcement explains its stated commitment to an ad-free paid tier: Our approach to advertising and expanding access to ChatGPT.
