Look for an active incident affecting the feature you’re using and check whether its timing matches your problem. If the status page shows no relevant incident, work through the browser and network checks below. A green status is a helpful clue, not proof that every feature or user is unaffected.
Check whether OpenAI reports an incident
Open OpenAI Status and inspect the ChatGPT service components for an issue related to your symptom. A problem with conversations, GPTs, or another feature may not be described simply as “ChatGPT is down,” so compare the affected component and the incident’s start time with when your trouble began.
Then check OpenAI Status History to see whether a relevant incident is active or resolved. A resolved incident could explain an earlier interruption, but it does not establish the cause of a problem happening now.
Status reporting has limits: OpenAI says its availability metrics are aggregated across tiers, models, and error types, and that individual availability may vary. So an operational display cannot rule out a narrower issue affecting a particular feature, model, tier, region, or user. Recheck the live page if your symptoms change.

If there’s no matching incident, test your browser
OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance covers errors such as “Something went wrong,” “A network error occurred,” and sessions that are stuck loading, unresponsive, or slow. Try these steps in order:
- Refresh ChatGPT. If the current conversation remains stuck, start a new chat.
- Try a private browsing window or another browser. If ChatGPT works there, the original browser session or its configuration may be involved.
- Temporarily disable extensions and content blockers. Retry ChatGPT, then re-enable them one at a time if that resolves the issue.
- Clear the browser’s cache and cookies if the problem continues, then sign in and try again.
These checks can help isolate a browser-specific problem, but they do not identify its cause on their own.

Test your connection, device, and network
- Temporarily turn off a VPN, proxy, or secure DNS filter and retry ChatGPT. These tools can affect the connection; you do not need to buy or install anything to troubleshoot.
- Try another network or device. For example, test a phone on mobile data if ChatGPT fails on a computer connected to Wi-Fi. If it works elsewhere, the original connection or device is a useful place to investigate.
- On a company network, ask IT about filtering. OpenAI’s network recommendations discuss domain allowlisting and secure WebSocket access for some features. A network policy that blocks required access or WebSocket traffic may interfere with ChatGPT.

A reported incident that matches your feature and the time of the failure points toward an OpenAI-side issue; wait for the incident to be updated and check the status page again. With no matching incident, compare what happens in a clean browser session and on another device or network. These are practical clues, not definitive tests, because aggregate status reporting may not reflect every user’s experience.

If the issue persists across browsers, devices, and networks, contact OpenAI Support. OpenAI recommends including timestamps and, when requested, a HAR file and browser console errors. Include what you were doing, the exact error message, and which troubleshooting steps you tried so support can understand when and where the failure occurs.
