Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse appears to fit the metroidvania tradition, but Konami has not officially used that genre label. The publisher describes it as an exploration-based 2D action game, with free exploration of large, crafted maps. The exact map structure and progression mechanics have not been established in the available official descriptions.
What kind of game is Belmont’s Curse?
Konami’s announcement calls Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse “an exploration-based 2D action game.” Its official game page uses the description “2D Action-Exploration game,” and says the story depicts Rose Belmont’s growth. Konami also describes the gameplay as faster and more fluid.
That wording establishes action and exploration as central to the game’s presentation. It does not, by itself, confirm specific mechanics such as ability-gated paths, required backtracking, or a single connected map.
Does it qualify as a metroidvania?
Calling Belmont’s Curse a metroidvania is a reasonable interpretation, not a formal genre classification confirmed by Konami. The game is presented as an exploration-focused 2D action title, and its Castlevania lineage makes the metroidvania comparison natural. PC Gamer likewise interpreted it as following the design tradition of Symphony of the Night (its April 2026 feature).
#1 Best Overall
- Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse | Night One Edition includes: Main Game, Alucard Style Costume, Digital Sound & Art Gallery, Trevor Style Costume, Sypha Style Costume, and Family's Grace (Relic).
- Medieval Paris, Where the Tolling Bells Herald the End - 1499: Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows. Armed with the legendary holy whip, the Vampire Killer, Trevor Belmont’s successor ventures into the burning streets and the looming castle to hunt down the beasts. Can they save the city from the brink of destruction?
- Satisfying Whip Action - The iconic whip of the series is now more important than ever! Crack your whip to move around freely like a trapeze artist! Master the whip mechanics and be creative to pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combats!
- A Large Selection of Weapons and Abilities - The whip is not the only tool at your disposal. You will need to strategically plan your next move in combat and make full use of all the weapons and abilities to stand a chance!
- Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!
The distinction matters: exploration is a broad design feature, while “metroidvania” usually signals a more specific kind of exploration and progression. The official descriptions cited here do not establish whether routes open through acquired abilities, how much backtracking is involved, or how the maps connect. Those details are needed to judge how closely the finished game follows conventional metroidvania mechanics.
Is Belmont’s Curse a roguelike or roguelite?
No. Tommy Williams, Konami’s head of communications for the Americas, told The Verge, as reported by PC Gamer in March 2026, that players can freely explore “vast, elaborately crafted maps.” He also said, “It is not a roguelike or roguelite game.” Evil Empire and Motion Twin are involved in development, but that association is not a reason to classify this particular title as a roguelike.

Konami also announced pre-orders alongside a Midnight Edition reveal; those announcements alone do not establish edition contents, platform-by-platform availability, or current retailer listings.
