Apple Express Transit has meaningful safeguards, but it trades an authentication prompt for speed: with Express Mode enabled, an eligible transit tap can work without Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Apple says payment credentials are protected in the device’s Secure Element and on-device transit balances are encrypted. It also warns that certain transit details may be accessible to nearby contactless readers. Whether that tradeoff suits you depends on your privacy preferences, card, and transit system.
How Express Transit changes the normal Apple Pay flow
With Express Mode enabled for an eligible card, you can tap to ride without waking or unlocking the device and without authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. That convenience is the defining difference from ordinary Apple Pay use: eligible Express Transit taps bypass the usual authentication step. Apple’s Express Mode instructions explain how to use and manage the feature.
For a typical in-store Apple Pay payment, Apple describes a different flow. NFC is designed to operate over short distances, and a payment uses a device-specific Device Account Number plus a transaction-specific dynamic security code rather than sending the actual payment card number. The bank, issuer, or payment network can check the code. This ordinary payment protection does not mean transit details are invisible to nearby readers when Express Mode is active. Apple’s Apple Pay security documentation describes the payment credential model.
What protects the credentials and stored balance
Device-specific payment credentials
Apple says the Device Account Number is unique to the device and stored in its Secure Element, a dedicated security component isolated from the operating system. Apple says this number is not stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud. These protections reduce exposure of the underlying payment card number, but they do not remove the Express Mode authentication tradeoff. Apple’s security guide explains how the Device Account Number is handled.

Transit-card balance encryption
For transit balances stored on the device, Apple says the data is encrypted in a designated Secure Element applet and that transit cards and transactions use hierarchical cryptographic keys. Transit cards are also associated with an iCloud account. Apple notes that it or the card issuer may be able to link personal and account information across multiple cards, so on-device encryption is not the same as anonymity from the service providers involved. Apple’s transit-card security guide describes these protections and account relationships.
What nearby readers may access
Apple’s security guide warns: “Information such as recently visited stations, transaction history and additional tickets may be accessed by any nearby contactless card reader with Express Mode enabled.” Apple’s guide does not quantify how often this occurs or provide an independent assessment of real-world risk. The important practical point is that Apple documents a transit-specific reader privacy consideration, despite the short range used by NFC.

- 13.56MHz PROTECTION FOR CARDHOLDERS – Magriffin RFID blocking card helps interfere with unwanted contactless scans of compatible credit cards, debit cards and e-passports. Designed for people who want added protection inside the wallet or passport holder they already carry
- VERIFY RFID BLOCKING WITH AN EASY SELF-TEST – Turn invisible protection into something you can check. At a compatible tap-to-pay terminal, confirm your payment card reads alone, tap again with the blocker directly against it, then remove the blocker and confirm normal reading returns
- CLEAR PLACEMENT FOR MORE RELIABLE PROTECTION – Position one credit card scan blocker close to the contactless cards you want to protect. Because distance, card position and wallet layout can affect RFID blocking performance, repeat the self-test after moving the blocker or rearranging your cards
- 0.029-IN ULTRA-SLIM WALLET FIT – At only 0.029 in (0.74 mm), these RFID cards for wallet use are slightly thinner than a standard credit card. Each passive RFID blocking card fits into a regular wallet without batteries, charging or switches and has been durability-tested for more than three years
- PROTECTION FOR DAILY CARRY, TRAVEL AND CROWDED PLACES—3 PACK – Place the three RFID blocking cards in different wallets or card groups, or share them with family. They help protect credit cards from scanners while commuting, shopping or traveling and are backed by a Magriffin lifetime warranty
If that exposure or the no-authentication tap is not acceptable to you, turn off Express Transit for the selected card. Apple says disabling Express Mode restores the requirement for Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode before using the card. Menu labels can vary by operating-system version; check your device’s Wallet & Apple Pay settings and current Apple support instructions.

Transit cards and payment cards do not behave identically
A transit gate may accept an agency-branded transit card or, in some locations, an eligible credit or debit card. Apple’s security guide distinguishes ordinary EMV credit or debit payments at transit readers, which require authentication, from certain existing EMV cards configured for Express Transit, which can be used without Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The card, issuer, agency, and reader determine what is supported, so do not assume all transit taps follow the same security flow. Apple’s security documentation covers the distinction.

What to do if your device is lost
If Find My was enabled, use it promptly to put the device in Lost Mode. Apple says this can suspend Apple Pay cards. Transit cards can also be removed through Find My remote erase or account controls, but Apple warns that a transit card cannot be removed or suspended while the device is offline. Do not assume the transit card is disabled immediately if the device cannot connect. If the transit card or stored balance needs separate handling, contact the transit agency or card issuer. Apple’s instructions for what to do when an iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen cover Find My and Lost Mode.

This is an operational feature, not a security statistic, and it applies only to supported cards and conditions. Apple’s transit-card guide describes Power Reserve.
What the available evidence can and cannot establish
Apple’s security and support documents describe the intended architecture and user controls. They do not establish an independently measured incident rate or prove that Express Transit is safer or less safe than another transit-payment method in real-world use. Treat the documented protections and reader-access warning as the basis for your decision, not as a numerical risk estimate.
