It is worth considering if you want a distinctive faceplate for artwork or occasional glanceable information—not if you expect a bright, animated display or fast-changing live stats. The choice is between Valve’s do-it-yourself Inkterface project, which involves electronics and mounting work, and JSAUX’s ready-made faceplate, listed at $99.99 on October 4, 2026. Neither option has been independently tested in a controlled comparison, so the best choice depends on how you plan to use the screen and how much effort you are willing to take on.
What E-Ink is good at—and where it falls short
E-paper reflects ambient light rather than relying on a backlight. Waveshare says its panels can retain the displayed image after power-off, which makes the technology well suited to persistent artwork or information you check occasionally. That behavior does not make E-Ink inherently suited to rapidly changing stats or animation.
Refresh behavior varies by panel, so one model’s specifications should not be treated as specifications for the Inkterface or JSAUX faceplate. As one example, Waveshare’s 4.26-inch, four-color E-Paper (G) is listed at 800 × 480 pixels, with a 20-second full refresh. Waveshare recommends waiting at least 180 seconds between refreshes and refreshing at least once every 24 hours for that product. It says actual refresh time and power can vary, and that flicker during a full refresh is normal.
Those figures are specific to Waveshare’s 4.26-inch panel, not the 5.83-inch monochrome panel in the Inkterface parts list or JSAUX’s faceplate. Check the display’s own documentation before assuming its refresh interval, power use, or care requirements.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose based on how you want to use the screen
| Use | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Static artwork or a display image | Good fit | E-paper can preserve the displayed image after power-off, according to Waveshare’s documentation. |
| Occasional glance at selected information | Potentially suitable | It may work if the panel and software update at a pace you find comfortable. Confirm the specific product’s refresh behavior. |
| Frequently changing live stats or animation | Weak fit | Refreshes can be slow or visually conspicuous. A Valve Inkterface builder reported that the screen performed a full refresh with each stats update and found it distracting; this is one person’s experience, not a controlled test. |
The Inkterface builder also said the app they used displayed only a few selected statistics at the time. That report describes one build and one point in time; it does not establish how every current setup behaves.
Valve Inkterface versus JSAUX: build effort or ready-made?
| Option | What the available information establishes | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Valve Inkterface DIY project | TechRadar’s July 2026 report lists an Adafruit ESP32 Feather with 2 MB PSRAM, an Adafruit eInk Breakout Friend, an Adafruit 5.83-inch monochrome eInk panel, 13 M2.5 × 5 mm screws, and four stepped magnets. It says Valve shared instructions, software, and 3D-print files. | You will need to source multiple components and handle assembly and mounting. The report does not establish a full current parts cost, required tools, or total build time. The Inkterface builder’s USB-power observation is not evidence of battery life or a general power requirement. |
| JSAUX E-Ink Faceplate | JSAUX’s product listing showed a $99.99 price, the label “COMING SOON,” and early-October and mid-October shipping batches when checked October 4, 2026. | The listing is a changing seller claim, not confirmation that orders have shipped or arrived. Check current price, stock, shipping, and software details before deciding. |
JSAUX describes app modes for time, weather, calendar, performance, playtime, progress, Digital Frame content, and AI Agent Status on its product page. These are manufacturer-advertised capabilities. The available sources do not independently establish the faceplate’s refresh cadence, battery duration, software reliability, or future support.

How to decide whether it is worth it for you
- Pick the DIY route if building and customizing the panel is part of the appeal and you are prepared to source the listed components and handle assembly. Treat the full cost and time as unknown until you price parts and assess the work for your setup.
- Consider JSAUX if you want a ready-made faceplate rather than assembling the electronics yourself. Its listed price and shipping batches can change, and its feature claims come from the manufacturer.
- Skip the mod or choose another kind of display if your priority is rapid, animated telemetry. E-Ink’s appeal is persistent, reflective content; frequent refreshes may be slow or distracting, depending on the specific panel and implementation.
- Before buying or building, decide whether you mainly want artwork or occasional status, check the chosen panel’s refresh and care instructions, and confirm the current product details for any commercial option.
What the available evidence does not settle
The information available here does not establish a controlled comparison of the two options’ value, reliability, or long-term cost. It also does not establish the total current DIY cost, total build time, or long-term panel health. As a result, the decision is best made around your intended use and willingness to build—not on an assumed performance or durability advantage.
