Yes—the Ryzen 5000 Chromebook tested in a 2022 hands-on was exceptionally fast in browser and graphics benchmarks, and showed little slowdown when unplugged. But the tested machine was an anonymous pre-production sample, not a retail Chromebook review, so its results cannot be assumed for every model. The Chromebook-specific Ryzen 5000 C-Series later named by AMD is a separate, identifiable lineup, including the Acer Chromebook Spin 514 and HP Elite c645 G2 Chromebook Enterprise.
How fast was the Chromebook in the hands-on?
In a hands-on published by Chrome Unboxed on April 13, 2022, Robby Payne tested an unnamed pre-production Chromebook with an AMD Ryzen 5 5800U, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. It scored close to 70,000 in Octane, just over 200 in Speedometer and about 980 in MotionMark. Those are strong results across browser and graphics-oriented tests.
These numbers describe one development sample and a short hands-on, not a standardized review of a finished retail laptop. The manufacturer was not disclosed, and the article did not establish whether that exact machine ever became a product. Treat the benchmarks as evidence that the configuration had substantial potential, not as a promise about any Chromebook bearing a Ryzen 5000 name. Chrome Unboxed’s hands-on.
Did performance drop when the sample was unplugged?
Payne reported barely any performance drop in the tested unit when it ran on battery rather than while connected to the charger. He contrasted that result with earlier AMD Chromebook tests, in which performance reportedly fell by nearly 40% off the charger. The earlier figure and the Ryzen 5000 result are the author’s testing observations, not a controlled comparison across finished retail models.
#1 Best Overall
- AMD Ryzen 3 7320C Quad-Core Processor
- 14" Touchscreen IPS Widescreen LED-Backlit WUXGA(1920 x 1200) Display
- Backlit Keyboard and 1080p Webcam with Privacy Shutter
- Memory (RAM) 8 GB
- SSD 256 GB
The report’s takeaway for everyday use is encouraging: a fast Chromebook that remains responsive away from a desk would be useful for demanding browser work and compatible Linux applications. It also points to Parallels and Steam gaming as workloads that might benefit from greater CPU headroom. Actual compatibility and performance depend on the final device and software; the hands-on does not establish a particular retail model’s results in those workloads.
Which Ryzen 5000 Chromebook models are identifiable?
AMD announced its Chromebook-specific Ryzen 5000 C-Series on May 5, 2022. AMD described the Zen 3 family as designed for premium Chrome OS devices and identified two product paths: the HP Elite c645 G2 Chromebook Enterprise, launching first with the Ryzen 7 5825C, and the Acer Chromebook Spin 514, expected to follow later in 2022. These are named retail designs, unlike the anonymous 5800U sample in the hands-on. AMD’s Ryzen 5000 C-Series announcement.

The available information does not establish current stock, regional availability, verified street prices, or the final fate of the anonymous sample. Nor does it provide a retail-model comparison of displays, chassis, battery life, or ChromeOS update support. Those are important checks when choosing between specific listings; the processor name alone does not settle them.
How the Chromebook-specific C-Series processors compare
AMD announced four 15W Ryzen 5000 C-Series processors. Their core counts range from two to eight, so the model number matters: “Ryzen 5000 Chromebook” does not identify one uniform performance level.

What to check before buying one
- Exact processor: distinguish the Chromebook-specific C-Series chip in a retail listing from the Ryzen 5 5800U used in the anonymous hands-on sample.
- Memory and storage: confirm the actual RAM and SSD capacity for the configuration being sold; the sample’s 16GB and 512GB are not established as standard for either named model.
- Whole-device quality: compare the specific model’s display, keyboard, chassis, battery behavior and intended audience rather than judging it on the processor name alone.
- Support and availability: confirm ChromeOS update support, region, stock and price from the seller or manufacturer for the exact model and configuration.
- Workload fit: if you rely on Linux apps, Parallels or Steam, check compatibility for the device and software you intend to use. The hands-on’s discussion of these workloads is not proof of performance or availability on every Ryzen 5000 Chromebook.
What AMD’s battery claim means
AMD said the family’s up-to-eight-core processors were intended to let users “stay unplugged all day without sacrificing performance and productivity.” AMD defines “all day battery life” as at least eight hours of continuous battery life. That is a vendor claim and definition, not a guarantee for every model or a result established by the Chrome Unboxed sample’s brief plugged-versus-unplugged test. Battery life varies by device and use.
