The strongest results so far concern defined tasks such as olympiad problems and proofs checked by formal software—not every kind of mathematical work.
What could “the end of math” mean?
The question can mean three different things: that mathematical work will disappear, that AI will replace mathematicians, or that tools will change how some mathematics gets done. The evidence supports the third possibility. It shows substantial progress on selected problems, but does not establish either of the first two.
It also helps to separate three outcomes that are easy to blur together: producing a plausible answer, proving that answer correct, and finding a result that mathematicians consider valuable. A system can do well at one without demonstrating the others across mathematics as a whole.
What have AI systems actually achieved?
Olympiad results are vivid demonstrations of progress, but they measure performance on specified contest problems. The milestones below are not interchangeable: they involve different problem sets, systems and evaluation conditions.

Taken together, these results show that AI can make meaningful headway on carefully specified, difficult problems. They do not tell us how well a system handles the open-ended work mathematicians do across the full range of mathematical fields.
Why a checked proof is different from a convincing explanation
A fluent explanation can look persuasive while containing a gap or an error. Formal proof systems address a different question: whether each step satisfies explicit rules. Systems such as Lean, together with libraries such as Mathlib, let mathematical reasoning be represented in a form that software can check.

Google DeepMind’s AlphaProof work used reinforcement learning in Lean. That matters because a machine-checked proof offers stronger verification than generated text alone. But verification does not settle every question a mathematician cares about: a checked proof may establish a result without showing that it is important, surprising, well-motivated or useful in a broader theory. Those judgments involve mathematical context and problem choice, not just correctness.
How AI may change mathematical research
AI can be part of a research workflow without replacing the work of research. A mathematician might use a system to explore candidate approaches, check a formal argument or help navigate a proof. The human role can still include choosing the question, interpreting what a result means, deciding whether it is significant and checking whether it advances understanding.

Keith Devlin’s 5 March 2024 commentary for the Mathematical Association of America argues that AI is already changing mathematical discovery, as earlier computational tools did. He also notes the difficulty of proving universal claims about what humans can solve that AI cannot. That is expert commentary, not a population-wide measurement of AI’s effect on professional mathematics.
The scale and conditions of a result matter. For example, the reported 2024 IMO silver-medal-equivalent score used multi-day computation. That is evidence about what the system achieved with that process, not a like-for-like claim about how a human contestant would perform under contest timing. More broadly, current benchmarks cannot by themselves resolve how AI will affect original discovery or day-to-day mathematical practice over the long term.

Does using AI help students learn mathematics?
Educational effectiveness is a separate question from whether a system can solve a hard problem. A correct solution can help a student understand a proof—or let them bypass the reasoning they need to learn. Homework results, exam results, time spent and students’ emotional experiences are distinct outcomes.
A 2025 arXiv preprint by Chen and colleagues describes a study involving 148 students who used an AI proof-review tutor and chatbot. The authors report improved homework performance, but no significant effect on exam performance or time spent on tasks. The findings also describe differing associations between usage patterns and outcomes, so they do not support a simple conclusion that AI tutoring either works or fails in general.

In a 2025 article in npj Science of Learning, Gabriel and colleagues argue that evaluation should look beyond the educational materials AI can produce. They call for attention to learning processes, teaching practice, teacher-student interactions and students’ achievement emotions. Those dimensions are important because producing a helpful-looking explanation is not the same as establishing that students have learned to reason independently.
What to watch as the tools improve
Future claims about AI and mathematics are easier to assess when they specify what was tested and how success was measured. Useful questions include:
- Scope: Was the system tested on one benchmark or problem family, or on open-ended work across mathematical areas?
- Verification: Is the output plausible generated reasoning, a proof checked by a formal system, or both?
- Human contribution: Who selected the problem, interpreted the result and decided that it mattered?
- Process and resources: How much computation and time did the reported result require?
- Learning: Does an educational claim concern homework, exams, time on task, or another outcome—and for which students?
These distinctions make room for real progress without turning a contest result into a claim that all mathematics has been automated.
So, is AI ending mathematics?
No. The evidence shows powerful advances in selected areas, including olympiad problem solving and machine-verified proof. It also points to tools that may change how mathematicians and students work. It does not show that mathematics itself is ending, that mathematicians are obsolete, or that performance on a defined benchmark amounts to mastery of the discipline.
