Not on the evidence available. Use of AI chatbots for news is growing, including among people who identify as very right-wing, and some conservative media sites have reported traffic declines. But the available studies do not show that AI caused those declines or that conservative outlets are falling behind because of it.

Are people using AI instead of conservative news sites?

AI chatbots are becoming one route to news, but they are not yet the main news source for most people. The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s 2026 Digital News Report found that weekly use of chatbots for news rose from 7% to 10% globally year over year. Just 1% of respondents said chatbots were their main source of news.

That adoption includes people at both ends of the political spectrum. In the same cross-market survey, 15% of respondents identifying as very right-wing said they had used chatbots for news in the previous week, compared with 16% of those identifying as very left-wing. The report associates higher use at the political extremes with greater interest in news; it does not show that either group is abandoning news publishers.

Chatbots can mediate discovery without necessarily replacing the original source. Across 27 markets, chatbot users who clicked through to a news site were less likely than search or social-media clickers to say they wanted more detail. They were relatively more likely to say they wanted to verify a story or learn about its source. Those reasons describe surveyed users’ motivations, not the total number of visits publishers gained or lost.

Are conservative media sites losing traffic?

Some signs of pressure are real, but traffic figures alone do not identify the cause. TheRighting’s February 2026 tracking report said every right-wing news website it tracked had declined year over year. It reported 18.4 million visits to Truth Social that month, down 27% from 25.2 million in February 2025, using Similarweb data.

Those figures are visits, not unique people, and they do not measure how much news users consumed or what publishers earned. TheRighting changed its methodology from Comscore unique visitors to Similarweb visits before December 2024, so its current visit figures should not be treated as the same metric as its earlier series. The report also noted a sharp daily traffic spike around the February 28, 2026 Iran strikes, illustrating how political events can move monthly totals.

Why is “conservative media” not one audience or one trend?

The ecosystem includes news websites, social platforms, broadcasters, podcasts, and individual commentators. Their audiences and fortunes can diverge. Axios’s January 2026 reporting described resource constraints among smaller outlets and disputes among prominent MAGA voices, which can make it harder to coordinate attention or deliver a unified message. The same report also identified audience gains for Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson, and some Daily Wire podcasts. That is evidence of a fragmented landscape, not a uniform retreat.

U.S. audience data also show why “right-wing media” should not be treated as interchangeable. Pew Research Center’s 2025 survey found that Newsmax was a regular news source for 15% of Republicans and Republican leaners versus 1% of Democrats and Democratic leaners; the corresponding figures were 12% versus 2% for The Daily Wire and 9% versus 1% for Tucker Carlson Network. Pew also found that 56% of Republicans and Republican leaners trusted Fox News as a source of news. These are measures of reported use and trust in the surveyed U.S. population, not website traffic or proof of editorial quality. Pew’s report measures the political composition of source audiences; it does not classify each source’s content by political lean. Its 2025 question wording also differs from its 2019 survey, so the results are not directly comparable.

What evidence connects AI to publishers’ referrals or advertising?

The distinction between a plausible mechanism and a measured effect matters. A chatbot answer or search summary can satisfy a user without a visit to a publisher. But the cited evidence does not quantify AI-attributable referral or revenue losses for named conservative outlets.

The Reuters Institute’s 2026 report describes chatbot use and click-through motivations, while also reporting a decline in organic Google traffic across thousands of sites. That broader search trend is not an AI-only measure and is not specific to conservative publishers. A fall in search referrals could have multiple causes; it cannot be assigned to AI from the figures reported here.

Index Exchange’s 2026 analysis of 1,200 publishers offers another, narrower view: on its platform, ad requests in the news and politics category declined 7%, and 69% of publishers in its analysis had year-over-year declines in ad opportunities. Index Exchange said news and politics had lower exposure to AI Overviews than some other categories, where it reported declines of 40–50%. These are platform-level advertising measures, not a representative comparison of conservative outlets, and ad requests or opportunities are not the same as revenue.

How should you judge the claim?

Before concluding that AI is making a particular outlet irrelevant, look for a direct link between the technology and that outlet’s results. The existing measures answer different questions:

Measure What it tells you What it does not establish
Chatbot use for news How many surveyed people report using chatbots and how often. Whether publishers lost readers or which outlets were affected.
Visits How often a site was visited during a period, according to the stated measurement provider. Unique people, time spent, trust, revenue, or the cause of a change.
Ad requests or ad opportunities Advertising activity measured on a platform or among its publishers. Publisher earnings or a result specific to conservative media.
Regular use or trust Survey respondents’ reported news habits or confidence in a source. Website traffic, audience growth, or AI’s effect on either.

A persuasive claim of AI-driven decline would need outlet-specific evidence, such as referral or audience data tied to exposure to AI answers, with other distribution changes and news-cycle effects accounted for. None of the cited reports provides that causal estimate for conservative publishers.

What this means for readers

AI is becoming part of news discovery, but the evidence here does not show that it has already pushed right-wing or conservative media outlets into the past. Some sites have lost visits, some smaller publishers face resource and factional pressures, and some personalities or podcasts have grown. Those developments can coexist. Treat a claim about AI displacing a specific outlet as unproven unless it is backed by evidence connecting AI exposure to that outlet’s audience, referrals, or revenue.
