Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—a budget laptop can handle routine work, browser-based schoolwork, email, and ordinary video calls if it runs your required apps and has enough memory for your multitasking. For a light workload, look for 8GB of RAM; 16GB is a better target if you often keep many tabs and apps open during calls. Check software compatibility and the laptop’s webcam, microphone, Wi-Fi, and storage as well: processor and memory figures alone cannot guarantee a good experience.
What counts as powerful enough?
For documents, email, online classes, web research, and standard video meetings, a budget laptop is often sufficient. The key distinction is between a device that meets a software minimum and one that remains comfortable when several things are running at once.
For example, Windows 11 lists 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage as minimum requirements. Those are eligibility thresholds, not a recommendation for a smooth everyday workload. Microsoft recommends 8GB for longer-term general use. [Windows 11 system requirements; Microsoft memory guidance]
How much memory do work, school, and calls need?
Choose RAM for the way you actually use the laptop, not just the operating system’s minimum. Video calls, browser tabs, documents, and school or work apps all compete for memory.

| Use case | Useful RAM target | What the guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Light documents, email, and a few browser tabs | 8GB | Microsoft recommends 8GB for longer-term general use; this is guidance, not a performance guarantee. Microsoft |
| Frequent multitasking during calls | 16GB, if the budget allows | Zoom’s desktop app recommends 16GB; Microsoft’s laptop guide describes 8–16GB+ for students. These are vendor recommendations, not comparative test results. Zoom; Microsoft |
| Zoom desktop app minimum | 4GB | Zoom lists 4GB as a minimum and 16GB as recommended. The minimum should not be treated as a comfortable multitasking target. Zoom desktop requirements |
| Zoom web app on Windows or macOS | 8GB recommended | Zoom recommends 8GB; it reports 1GB–1.5GB of active memory use during a meeting. Zoom web requirements |
| Zoom web app on ChromeOS | 4GB recommended | Zoom’s recommendation is specific to its web app and ChromeOS; other apps and workload still affect the experience. Zoom web requirements |
If you are choosing between more RAM and a faster processor, first make sure the processor meets the requirements of your essential apps. For ordinary browser-based work and calls, 8GB is a sensible starting point; choose 16GB when frequent multitasking matters. Check the exact configuration because some laptops have memory that cannot be upgraded later.
Will a Chromebook work, or do you need Windows?
A Chromebook can suit browser-based school or office work, but only if the required apps, exam or testing software, and peripherals work on ChromeOS. If you depend on a particular Windows desktop program, confirm its compatibility before buying rather than assuming a web alternative will be accepted.

Google for Education’s Chromebook selection guide lists 4GB as a minimum for its basic and learning-anywhere categories, and 8GB for an advanced category covering heavy multitasking, large calls, multiple tabs, and external displays. Those categories are education guidance, not a universal performance test for every Chromebook. Google Chromebook selection guide
For Windows 11, the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage minimums are only part of the requirements; Microsoft also lists processor, firmware, TPM, graphics, display, and setup-account requirements. Microsoft says Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Microsoft Windows 11 requirements

How much storage should you get?
Storage needs depend on whether you keep files locally or rely on cloud services. Microsoft’s laptop buying guide suggests 128–256GB for users oriented toward cloud storage, and 512GB–1TB for people who save many files on the laptop. Large projects, downloaded media, and offline files can make local capacity more important. Microsoft laptop buying guide
What matters for video-call quality besides specifications?
A supported app and adequate RAM do not guarantee a clear, reliable call. The individual laptop’s camera, microphone, speakers, and wireless connection matter, and the cited requirements do not establish the quality of any particular model’s components.

- Webcam: Check whether the image is acceptable in the lighting where you will take calls. A listed camera resolution alone does not establish image quality.
- Microphone and speakers: Look for clear voice pickup and audible playback. Zoom notes that most laptops have integrated webcams and audio devices; a USB or Bluetooth headset is an optional alternative if the built-in audio is unsatisfactory. Zoom laptop guide
- Wi-Fi: A capable laptop cannot compensate for weak or unstable internet. Zoom’s published bandwidth guidance varies with call type and resolution: for one-to-one calls, it lists 1.2Mbps up and down for 720p video, and 3.8Mbps up and 3.0Mbps down for 1080p. These are Zoom’s published requirements, not a guarantee that a connection will be stable. Zoom web requirements

What to check before buying
- Confirm required software. Ask your school or employer which operating system, desktop apps, testing tools, and peripherals are required. Choose ChromeOS only if those needs are covered.
- Check the exact RAM configuration. Aim for 8GB for light work and 16GB if you routinely multitask during calls. Verify whether the memory is upgradeable.
- Match storage to your habits. Consider 128–256GB for a cloud-first workflow or more capacity if you keep many files locally.
- Assess call hardware and connectivity. Check the webcam, microphone, speakers, headset options, and Wi-Fi in the setting where you expect to work.
- Compare ownership details. Review the exact model configuration, battery life, display, keyboard, warranty, and return policy—not just the advertised processor or lowest price.
The cited vendor guidance does not compare named budget models in independent benchmarks or establish their prices, battery results, or camera performance. Without a budget ceiling, country, required apps, platform preference, and workload, a specific model recommendation would not be reliable.
