For a PS5, a USB external SSD can store PS4 games and archive PS5 games, but you must copy a PS5 game back to console storage before playing it. If you want extra space to play PS5 games directly, look at a compatible internal M.2 SSD. Xbox rules depend on the console model, so check its official guidance before choosing a drive.
Is 2TB enough for a PC?
It can be. A 2TB external SSD is a reasonable add-on for PC games, media, and other files, but the capacity alone cannot tell you how many games it will hold. Install sizes vary, and your existing library and future additions matter more than a general game-count estimate.
Estimate your own storage needs

In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage to review how space is being used. See Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance for more detail.

Add up the installed games and files you expect to move or add to the external drive. Include room for the library to grow rather than planning only around what you have today.

Use Windows’ save-location settings to choose where new content is saved. Microsoft’s instructions are under managing storage drives in Windows.
For example, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is listed in a 2TB capacity for PC and PS5. PlayStation Direct advertises read speeds of up to 1000 MB/s for that model; this is a stated maximum, not an independent performance test. Check the specific drive’s interface and compatibility with your PC before buying.

Is a 2TB external SSD enough for a PS5?
It can be useful, but an external USB SSD has different roles for PS4 and PS5 games. PlayStation supports compatible SuperSpeed USB extended storage from 250GB through 8TB, so 2TB falls within its stated range. See PlayStation’s USB extended storage requirements and confirm that the drive meets them.
PS4 games: play from the external drive
You can store and play PS4 games from compatible USB extended storage on PS5. This makes an external SSD useful if you want to keep PS4 titles installed without using the console’s internal storage.

PS5 games: store them, then copy them back to play
PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage, but they cannot be launched directly from it. PlayStation says to copy PS5 game data back to console storage when you want to play. That makes an external SSD an archive or transfer option for PS5 titles, rather than additional space for playing them directly. The SanDisk listing describes moving games from external storage to PS5 internal storage; that example does not change the platform rule.
For directly playable PS5 expansion, consider internal M.2 storage
A compatible internal M.2 SSD is a separate option for expanding PS5 storage for games played from console storage. PlayStation Direct lists a 2TB WD Black SN850P as an officially licensed internal NVMe SSD for PS5 and advertises up to 2TB of additional storage. Its listing’s claim that it can hold up to 100 games is vendor copy, not a universal count: game sizes differ. What about an Xbox console?
Do not assume that PS5’s external-storage rules apply to Xbox. External-drive behavior can vary by Xbox model, and the available guidance here does not establish the rules for Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. Check the official support guidance for your exact console model before buying a USB SSD for active game storage.
