Yes, 4GB of RAM can handle light Linux browsing and office work, but it is a constrained setup—not a guarantee of comfortable performance. Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS specifies 6GB for a comfortable experience, so with 4GB you should keep browser tabs and open applications modest. The published requirements below are guidance, not a controlled test of a particular 4GB computer.

What 4GB can handle—and where it gets tight

For routine email, ordinary web pages, a modest number of browser tabs, and office documents, 4GB may be sufficient. The limitation is that the browser, websites, desktop environment, office application, and background services all share that memory. Keeping several demanding apps or many tabs open at once can make the available headroom tight.

How it feels depends on the whole computer, including its processor, storage, graphics, and device compatibility, as well as the websites and documents you use. No published source here measures this exact workload on a 4GB Linux machine, so treat this as a cautious fit assessment rather than a performance guarantee.

How published memory requirements compare

Software or guidance Published memory figure What it means for a 4GB computer
Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS 6GB for a comfortable experience; Ubuntu says lower-spec systems may still install the desktop and recommends an official flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu for systems with 2GB RAM or more. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes 4GB is below Ubuntu’s stated comfortable-experience specification, though the release notes do not say installation is impossible.
Firefox 143.0 Recommended: 1GB for 32-bit and 2GB for 64-bit. Mozilla cautions that Linux distributors may package Firefox with different requirements. Mozilla Firefox 143.0 system requirements These are browser requirements, not a memory target for the complete desktop, multiple tabs, or other open apps.
LibreOffice for Linux 256MB minimum; 512MB recommended. The Document Foundation’s system requirements This is an application prerequisite, not a whole-computer workload benchmark.

Ubuntu’s specification also includes a 2GHz dual-core processor or better and 25GB of free storage for a comfortable experience. Memory alone does not determine whether the computer will be a good fit.

Choose an approach based on your computer and workload

If you already have a 4GB computer

  • Try Linux with a restrained number of browser tabs and avoid keeping several demanding applications open simultaneously.
  • If choosing Ubuntu, consider an official lighter flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu, which Ubuntu recommends for lower-spec systems. The cited guidance does not establish a benchmark ranking among flavors.
  • Check that your essential peripherals and applications work. Ubuntu advises trying the desktop or checking certified hardware if compatibility is uncertain.

If you are choosing or upgrading a computer

  • If you want Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS and a comfortable experience according to Ubuntu’s published guidance, look for at least 6GB of RAM.
  • Before buying memory, check the exact computer model’s manual or manufacturer specifications for supported memory type, maximum capacity, and whether the RAM is replaceable. Without the model, no specific module or capacity can be recommended.
  • Consider the processor, storage, and graphics alongside RAM; some graphics hardware shares system memory.

If you plan to install Linux

For an Ubuntu 24.04 installation, Ubuntu’s tutorial recommends a USB flash drive of 8GB or more and warns that creating the installer erases the drive. Back up its contents first. This is an installation requirement, not a way to improve runtime performance. Ubuntu’s desktop installation tutorial

Does swap make 4GB enough?

Swap can provide a safety valve when physical memory is pressured, but it is not equivalent to adding RAM. The published requirements cited here do not establish that adding swap will make browsing and office work feel responsive, so do not rely on it as a performance fix.
