The iPhone XS and XS Max were reported to use Intel’s XMM 7560 LTE modem; the available evidence does not establish a Qualcomm-versus-Intel modem split among XS models. Their cellular performance nevertheless varied by signal strength, antenna design, network, and test conditions. The clearest comparisons are between the XS generation and older iPhones or Qualcomm-powered Android phones—not between different XS modem suppliers.
Did different iPhone XS models use different modems?
Reports identify Intel’s XMM 7560 LTE modem in both the iPhone XS and XS Max. They do not support the claim that some XS or XS Max units used Qualcomm modems while others used Intel. Nor does the available evidence establish a complete mapping of regional model numbers to radio components.
The meaningful distinction in the cited comparisons is between the XS generation and other devices, including the iPhone X and Qualcomm-powered Android phones. That comparison is not modem-only: the XS generation also added 4×4 MIMO antenna capability, which affects cellular results.
What did the performance comparisons measure?
The reported results come from two different kinds of comparison: a controlled test that varied signal strength on one LTE band, and launch-period field measurements aggregated across carriers. They answer different questions and should not be treated as a universal ranking of phones or networks.

Controlled Band 4 test
Cellular Insights tested the XS Max, an Intel iPhone X, Galaxy Note 9, and Pixel 2 on a 20 MHz Band 4 channel while varying signal strength, according to MacRumors’ account of the work as reported through PCMag. In strong-signal conditions, 9to5Mac reported averages of around 200 Mb/s for iPhone X and just under 400 Mb/s for XS Max. These are results from that test setup, not expected speeds on every LTE band or carrier.
The XS Max remained competitive as the signal weakened, and the 4×4 MIMO antenna design helped it improve on the iPhone X in the reported comparison. At signal weaker than -120 dBm, it became more competitive with the Android phones; at the very weakest signal, Qualcomm X20 phones could perform better. The result illustrates why a strong-signal result does not predict performance at the edge of coverage.

Launch-period field measurements
Ookla data reported by PCMag and MacRumors, collected during the week of September 24, 2018, showed the iPhone XS averaging 6.6 Mb/s faster downloads than the iPhone X across U.S. carriers. The same reporting cited a 20.2 Mb/s average boost over the iPhone X on Canadian carriers. These are historical aggregates, not measurements of your carrier or a promise about current network speeds.
In the cited comparison, the Galaxy Note 9 averaged 43.2 Mb/s and the iPhone XS averaged 38.9 Mb/s. That launch-era field comparison does not establish which phone is faster on a particular network today.

Why does an XS result differ from an older iPhone or Android phone?
- Antenna design: The XS generation’s 4×4 MIMO capability means its advantage over iPhone X cannot be assigned to the modem alone.
- Signal strength: Relative performance changed as the controlled test reduced signal; the weakest-signal result differed from the strong-signal result.
- Test method: A controlled 20 MHz Band 4 laboratory comparison is not equivalent to averages gathered from phones on multiple carriers in the field.
- Network conditions: Carrier, LTE band, coverage, and local network conditions affect achieved speeds. The reported figures do not cover every band, carrier, or location.
Does LTE Category 16 mean the XS downloads at 1,024 Mb/s?
No. Notebookcheck lists the iPhone XS as LTE Category 16, with a theoretical maximum download capability of 1,024 Mb/s. That is a peak specification, not a likely user speed or a guarantee. Actual throughput depends on the network and conditions, as the much lower historical field averages illustrate.
Notebookcheck also lists support for LTE bands 14, 32, and 46 compared with its stated prior configuration, and attributes improved network communication to 4×4 MIMO. Its Wi-Fi router measurements concern Wi-Fi and should not be read as cellular modem results.

What can these results tell you about an iPhone XS today?
They establish that the XS generation improved on the iPhone X in the cited launch-era comparisons, particularly under strong signal, while performance relative to Qualcomm-powered phones depended on conditions. They do not establish current speeds, present-day carrier compatibility for a specific XS model number, or a performance difference between XS units based on modem supplier.
