Major operating-system upgrades and security patches are separate: a phone may stop getting the newest OS while still receiving security fixes. Apple publishes compatibility lists and dated security releases, but the cited Apple sources do not promise a fixed support period for every iPhone. Xiaomi says it typically maintains security updates for at least two years from a model’s first shipment, with some models supported for three years or longer; its model listings provide more specific details.
What “software support” means
Compare two things separately: eligibility for major operating-system upgrades and ongoing security updates. A phone that cannot install the newest iOS or Android-based software is not necessarily out of security support. Conversely, being able to install a major OS version does not establish that the phone is still receiving security patches.
Update cadence is another useful detail when a manufacturer publishes it. A monthly or 90-day cadence is not a promise that every update will arrive on the same date in every region.
iPhone support: check compatibility and security releases
Apple’s cited official pages do not set one fixed support-duration guarantee for all iPhones. Instead, use its security releases page to see dated updates across iOS generations, and its iOS 27 compatibility guide to check which model families are eligible for that major version. Compatibility and security-release history answer different questions, so check both.

- Open Settings > General > About to identify your iPhone model.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update to see the update currently offered to that device.
- Compare the model with Apple’s compatibility guide, then review Apple’s dated security-release records for updates to its iOS generation.
Apple says, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” The company has issued updates for older iOS versions, so lack of eligibility for the newest iOS alone does not prove that security support has ended.
Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO support: use the model listing
Xiaomi’s general smartphone policy says it typically maintains security updates for at least two years after the first shipment of a model. It adds that some models may receive three years or longer, depending on actual conditions. The policy covers Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO smartphones, but this general statement is not a specific duration promise for every model. See Xiaomi’s smartphone product support policy.

The clock starts at first shipment, not when an individual buyer purchases the phone. A model bought later may therefore have less support time remaining than a newly shipped model. For a more precise answer, search the Xiaomi Security Center for the exact model and check the security-update end-of-life information separately from the listed shipped and future OS versions. The model data can also specify update frequency, but rollout dates may vary by region.
Xiaomi says products on its end-of-life list no longer receive maintained software or firmware updates. It also allows that a fix may still be supplied after end of life for a very serious vulnerability. That exception should not be treated as continuing routine support.

How to compare two specific phones
Before choosing between models, look up the exact device rather than relying on a brand-wide estimate. Record the date you checked, because support pages and policies can change.
- Major OS runway: Which future or latest OS versions are listed for the model?
- Security-patch end date: Is a model-specific security EOL published, and when is it?
- Update cadence: Is a frequency listed, and does it describe a schedule rather than a guaranteed delivery date?
- Starting point: For Xiaomi, account for the first-shipment date, not just your purchase date.
- Region and variant: Confirm the listing matches the precise regional model or SKU; similarly named phones may have different records.
- Evidence date: Recheck the vendor’s live support page before buying or deciding whether to keep using a phone.
Do not treat app compatibility, an installed major OS, or a brand’s general policy as proof that a particular device is receiving current security patches. The useful answer is the latest OS eligibility and the security-update status for that exact model.
