Android led worldwide smartphone sales in the second quarter of 2026, but that does not prove there are more Android phones currently in use. The figures below compare specific measures—sales, manufacturer shipments and surveys—so the differences are useful without pretending they all count the same thing.
Are there more iPhone or Android users?
A definitive, transparent global count of active iPhone and Android users for 2026 is not established by the figures available here. The clearest worldwide comparison is a measure of quarterly sales: Counterpoint Research reported that Android accounted for 75% of smartphone sales in Q2 2026, iOS for 20%, and HarmonyOS for 5%. Those are shares of sales during that quarter, not shares of every phone people were using. Counterpoint Research’s OS sales-share series reports that measure.
That distinction matters because phones remain in use after they are sold. A quarter’s sales can show which platforms are winning new purchases in that period, but it cannot by itself count the installed base. So the careful answer is: Android led global Q2 sales; the exact global active-user split is unresolved by these sources.
What’s the difference between Android market share and iPhone market share?
“Android” is an operating system used by phones from many manufacturers. “iPhone” is Apple’s phone line, which runs iOS. As a result, a statistic about Apple’s share of manufacturer shipments is not the same thing as iOS’s operating-system share.

Q2 2026 sales and shipment measures

IDC’s 20.2% figure is Apple’s manufacturer shipment share, not iOS share. Android devices are supplied by multiple companies, so comparing Apple’s company share with Android’s platform share mixes two different categories. IDC also reported that the worldwide shipment market contracted in the quarter. IDC’s Q2 2026 shipment report provides the shipment figures and analyst commentary.
IDC attributed pressure in the quarter partly to memory costs. Nabila Popal, senior research director for Worldwide Consumer Devices at IDC, said: “Memory costs are up nearly 300% from a year ago, and now account for over 65% of BOM at the low end, making survival increasingly difficult for OEMs with low-end portfolios.” Popal also said, “Q2 confirms exactly what we predicted: this is not a uniform downturn; memory crisis is favoring premium players and punishing vendors exposed to the low end.” Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for Worldwide Client Devices at IDC, summarized the split: “This memory crisis has split the smartphone market in two.”

Which country has more iPhone users?
There is no single answer without specifying the measure and country. Counterpoint’s Q2 2026 figures are quarterly OS sales shares, not a census of current users:

In this sales measure, iOS narrowly led Android in the United States, while Android led in China and India. China’s HarmonyOS share is substantial, so an Android-versus-iOS-only framing would leave out nearly a quarter of reported sales there. The figures are from Counterpoint Research’s Q2 2026 OS sales-share data.

What do surveys of current phone users say?
Surveys answer a different question from market-sales trackers: they report what a defined group of respondents says it primarily uses. Results depend on who was asked and how the survey was conducted.
Japan: a near split among smartphone owners
NTT DOCOMO Mobile Society Research Institute’s 2026 web survey found Android at 55.4% and iPhone at 44.6% among smartphone owners in Japan. Fieldwork took place in January 2026 and included 6,748 people aged 15–79, quota sampled by sex, age and prefecture. The measure was each respondent’s primarily used phone; tablets were excluded, and Android included senior-oriented smartphones. This is a national survey result, not a global user estimate. AV-Comparatives: a specialist respondent group
In AV-Comparatives’ 2026 IT Security Survey, 74.3% of respondents reported Android, 24.5% iOS/iPhone, and 1.3% not applicable or unknown. Among respondents identifying as advanced or professional, 28% reported iOS, compared with 13% among basic or novice respondents. This is the organization’s survey population, not a representative worldwide census, so it should not be used to overturn or replicate the Japan or sales figures. In the NTT DOCOMO institute’s Japanese survey, iPhone use was about 60% among respondents aged 15–19 and about 70% among respondents in their 20s in 2025–2026. Among respondents in their 30s, the split was approximately even in 2026. These are rounded descriptions for the survey’s Japanese population, not a claim about young people worldwide. The underlying survey details are in the institute’s 2026 release.

Is it getting easier to switch between iPhone and Android?
Some cross-platform transfer and interoperability work is underway, but availability depends on the feature, software version and region. The European Commission’s May 11, 2026 factsheet says Apple and Google have been working on a cross-OS data-transfer solution because existing transfer options have completeness limits. That describes work on a solution, not a guarantee that every kind of data can already be moved seamlessly.
- EU-only: iOS 26.3 included a beta framework for accessory notifications.
- EU-only: iOS 26.4 included Wi-Fi infrastructure and accessory transport frameworks.
- Worldwide: the Commission describes Wi-Fi Aware in iOS 26.0 as enabling nearby-device communication without an internet connection.
- Future EU requirement: automatic audio switching for non-connected devices is due by June 1, 2027; it is not described as already deployed.
These changes affect compatibility and transfer options, not the meaning of the market-share statistics. The Commission’s May 11, 2026 DMA interoperability factsheet specifies their geography and status.
