Pixel Call Screen asks selected callers who they are and why they are calling; calls identified as spam are declined, while other screened calls can ring after you see the caller’s response. Neither feature guarantees that every unwanted call will be blocked.
How iPhone Silence Unknown Callers works
On iPhone, “unknown callers” means numbers that are not saved in Contacts. With Silence enabled, those calls do not ring: they are silenced, sent to voicemail, and appear in Recents. The caller is not asked to identify themselves, and the call is not necessarily blocked from leaving a voicemail.
Apple’s current guide documents the controls under Settings > Apps > Phone. The available choices are:
- Never: Unsaved numbers ring like other calls.
- Ask Reason for Calling: The iPhone asks an unknown caller for more information before it rings. Apple says the phone then shares the caller’s response so you can decide whether to answer.
- Silence: Unsaved numbers are silenced and routed to voicemail.

How Pixel Call Screen works
Google Call Screen is not a universal Android feature. Google’s instructions cover supported Pixel phones and, in limited circumstances, selected other Android devices. In automatic screening, Call Assist asks the caller who they are and why they are calling. If it identifies the call as spam, the phone hangs up; otherwise, the phone rings and shows the caller’s response.
With manual screening, you tap Screen call. You can review a live transcript, choose a suggested response, answer, or hang up. Google says contacts are not screened automatically; the Phone app uses your contacts to decide whether to screen a call. For details, see Google’s Call Screen instructions.

What each feature blocks—or does not

On iPhone, two other controls are easy to confuse with Silence. The Unknown Callers filter moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into a separate list; it organizes call history rather than blocking calls. The separate Spam control silences and sends to voicemail calls a carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud, placing them in a Spam list. Apple describes these controls in its guide to managing unknown callers.
Availability and practical limitations
Google Pixel and other supported Android devices
Google lists automatic Pixel screening in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the US. Manual Pixel screening is listed in those countries plus France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and Spain. Selected Android devices also support manual screening in the US and Canada; Google says the SIM must be from a supported country for manual screening. Eligible caller categories and settings differ across Pixel generations: Google describes unknown-caller settings for Pixel 6 and earlier, and protection levels for Pixel 7 and later. Google says Call Screen runs on the device without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Automatic screening may not work while roaming or in some Bluetooth or headphone scenarios. Google advises against using call forwarding with screening because screened calls will not be forwarded. It also warns that transcription may misunderstand callers and that not all spam or robocalls are detected. A call that gets through screening should not be assumed safe.
iPhone
Apple says screening does not operate while roaming, and it turns off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. Carrier-based Spam filtering depends on the carrier identifying a call as potential spam or fraud. These controls and their labels may vary by iOS version and carrier.

Caller ID and privacy notes
Apple says iPhone may identify calls using information from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported call identification apps. Google says numbers for calls from people outside your contacts may be sent to Google to help identify a business caller ID name or determine whether a call is spam. Google separately says screened-call audio and transcripts are not saved to your Google Account or activity pages; its documentation describes sharing Call Screen data as an optional setting. These statements apply to the specific identification and screening functions described, not to every form of phone or account data.

Which should you use?
- Choose iPhone Silence if you want unsaved numbers not to interrupt you and are comfortable checking voicemail and Recents for calls you may have missed.
- Choose iPhone Ask Reason for Calling if you want unknown callers to explain themselves before your phone rings.
- Use Pixel Call Screen if your device, country, and SIM support it and you want callers to be screened before deciding whether to answer.
The key difference is the trigger: iPhone Silence acts on whether a number is saved, while Pixel Call Screen acts on screening settings and caller categories. Silence prioritizes fewer interruptions; interactive screening gives you information before you decide whether to pick up.
