Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFast charging does not, by itself, prove that your iPhone battery will wear out faster. It gets you more charge in less time, while battery lifespan depends on factors including heat, charging habits and the battery’s chemical age. Apple describes built-in charging protections and battery-care settings, but does not publish a controlled comparison showing how much faster charging changes long-term battery wear.
Here, “battery life” means how long a charge lasts during the day; “battery lifespan” means how the battery’s capacity and performance change over months and years. The practical advice is straightforward: use a compatible charger and cable, avoid excessive heat, and choose a charge limit or optimized charging if it suits your routine.
Does fast charging hurt iPhone battery health?
Apple’s guidance does not establish that fast charging alone causes a specific amount of extra battery wear compared with slower charging. A charger’s wattage is not a battery-health reading, and a higher-wattage adapter does not mean an iPhone will draw that power continuously. The phone manages charging as the battery fills and as conditions change.
Lithium-ion batteries chemically age over time. Apple identifies chemical age, temperature history and charging pattern as factors that affect capacity and peak performance. Heat is particularly actionable: Apple warns that using or charging an iPhone in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. A battery also warms as it charges, which is why Apple recommends avoiding hot conditions rather than treating a lower charger wattage as a guaranteed way to preserve health. Apple’s battery maintenance guidance explains these factors.

Why charging slows near full
Charging speed is not constant from empty to full. Apple says iPhone gradually reduces charging current as the battery approaches full to limit heat and prevent overheating. Its charging-speed guidance describes faster charging to around 80%, followed by slower charging. That taper is normal battery management; slower charging near full is not, on its own, evidence that a fast charger has damaged the battery. See Apple’s explanation of iPhone charge speeds.
Which charger and cable support faster wired charging?
For faster wired charging, Apple specifies a USB-C Power Delivery charger and the cable that matches the iPhone generation:

A charger providing 7.5W or less over a wired connection may take longer than expected, according to Apple. Actual speed can also be reduced if a multiport charger is sharing its output, you charge from a computer or USB hub or car port, you use demanding apps while charging, or the phone is hot. A charger with a very high maximum output does not guarantee the iPhone will accept that power throughout a charge, and Apple does not identify one universally best branded charger for battery longevity.
Apple’s cable-and-charger guidance is at About iPhone charge speeds. Match the cable to your iPhone’s connector; the charging standard alone is not enough if the cable is incompatible.

Is it safe to leave an iPhone charging overnight?
Yes. Apple says iPhone automatically stops charging when the battery is full and resumes if the charge level falls below 95%. That makes overnight charging safe under normal conditions. Optimized Battery Charging can further reduce how long the phone remains fully charged by delaying charging beyond 80% in circumstances where the iPhone expects to stay connected for an extended period.
Keep the phone and charger out of hot surroundings. Apple’s temperature warning applies whether charging is fast or slow: using or charging above 35°C (95°F) ambient temperature can permanently reduce battery lifespan. For overnight charging habits and temperature guidance, see Apple’s battery maintenance page.

Which battery charging settings should you use?
These settings are options, not mandatory rituals. A lower limit can reduce time spent at a high charge level, but it also leaves you with less charge available for the day. If you regularly need a full battery, keep the limit at 100% and use Optimized Battery Charging where available.
iPhone 15 models and later: set a Charge Limit
Apple lets these models set a Charge Limit between 80% and 100% in 5% increments. If you select 100%, Optimized Battery Charging is available and may delay charging beyond 80% when the phone expects to remain connected for a long time. The iPhone may occasionally charge to 100% even with a lower limit to keep its battery-charge estimates accurate.

iPhone 14 models and earlier: use Optimized Battery Charging
On earlier models, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and use the Optimized Battery Charging setting. It is designed to reduce the time the iPhone spends fully charged by delaying charging past 80% in certain situations.
What do Apple’s battery cycle figures mean?
Apple’s cycle figures are design targets under ideal conditions, not a promise that every iPhone will retain a particular capacity for a set number of cycles. Apple says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; for iPhone 15 models and later, the target is 80% after 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. Actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. These figures do not compare fast charging with slower charging. Apple discusses them in About the battery and performance of iPhone 11 and later.
