Before taking a low-light photo, check that Night mode is active, decide whether flash or a Live Photo matters more for this shot, and keep the iPhone still for the full capture. On supported iPhones, Night mode turns on automatically in low light; the duration it offers depends on the scene and how steadily the phone can be held.

1. Check Night mode and its capture duration

Night mode is available on iPhone 11 and later, though its related features vary by model. When the camera detects low light on a supported device, Night mode turns on automatically. Look for its indicator in the Camera app and check the suggested capture duration before pressing the shutter. Apple describes the feature as automatically brightening photos and capturing more detail in low light, but that does not mean it guarantees a better result in every scene: Apple’s Night mode guide.

If the camera offers duration choices, select one that suits both the darkness and movement in the scene. A longer capture can gather more light for a still subject, but even small movements from the photographer or subject can make the result less sharp. If someone is moving, a shorter capture may be the safer choice.

2. Choose between Night mode, flash, and Live Photo

Flash and Live Photo are not neutral toggles in low light: manually turning on either disables Night mode. Apple says that when iPhone is in Night mode, Live Photos and flash are not active. Auto flash can still fire in low light, so check its setting rather than assuming it will stay off. See Apple’s Night mode guidance, the iPhone camera guide, and Apple’s Live Photos guide.

What matters for this shot Setting to favor Trade-off
A still scene with very little ambient light Night mode; keep the phone and scene still A longer capture is more vulnerable to movement.
A nearby subject that needs immediate illumination Try flash, then inspect the result Manually turning flash on disables Night mode.
Capturing movement or the moments around a shutter press Live Photo, if it is more important than Night mode Turning Live Photo on disables Night mode. Live Photo also cannot be used with ProRAW or HEIF Max.
A moving subject where blur is a concern Use a shorter Night mode duration if available, or test flash where appropriate A shorter capture may gather less light; flash may change the look of the scene.

Live Photo is on by default according to Apple’s guide, but Night mode takes precedence unless you manually enable Live Photo. If you need a Live Photo, enable it deliberately and confirm the Night mode indicator changes. There is no single best setting: the choice depends on subject movement, available ambient light, and whether flash or a Live Photo is essential.

3. Set focus and exposure for the subject

  1. In Camera, tap the subject or the part of the scene you want in focus.
  2. Drag the exposure control to make the image brighter or darker. Check both highlights and shadows; increasing brightness is not always the right adjustment.
  3. To keep the chosen focus and exposure while recomposing or as light changes, press and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears.

Apple’s instructions for adjusting focus and exposure are in the iPhone camera guide. These adjustments let you refine the camera’s automatic choice without assuming that a brighter image will preserve useful detail.

4. Check whether Camera is preserving an old choice

If Camera reopens with a Night mode or exposure setting you did not expect, review Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings. On iPhone 11 and later, Exposure Adjustment can retain a manual exposure choice. On supported models, Night Mode can preserve its last setting instead of returning to Auto. To let Night mode behave automatically, choose Auto and avoid preserving an override you do not intend to keep. Apple’s Preserve Settings guide explains the available controls.

5. Keep the iPhone steady and check model support

Hold the phone still until the capture finishes. For a static scene, a stable surface or tripod can reduce movement; Apple recommends these options for clearer exposure. A smartphone tripod with a compatible phone holder is one possible setup, but check that the holder fits your iPhone and case.

Apple’s published guidance identifies Night mode for iPhone 11 and later, while warning that not all camera features are available on all models. Night mode Portrait, selfies, and time-lapse have narrower model support than the basic feature. Check the controls on your specific iPhone and its support page rather than assuming every Night mode variation is available.
