For smoother moving shots, subject tracking and motorized camera moves, choose a smartphone gimbal. For a handheld setup built around mounting a microphone, light or grip, start with a cage-style iPhone rig. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends on whether you need stabilization or a configurable accessory platform.
What is the difference between an iPhone rig and a gimbal?
Cage-style iPhone rig
A cage or phone rig is a platform for holding and configuring your phone and compatible accessories. It is the better starting point when your setup depends on mounting items such as a microphone, light or grip. A cage does not, by itself, provide the powered stabilization of a motorized gimbal; check the particular rig and mounts for fit and accessory compatibility.
Smartphone gimbal
A gimbal uses motors to stabilize the phone as you move it, and some models add subject tracking and other camera movement features. DJI describes tracking options for its Osmo Mobile 7 series, including Multifunctional Module tracking with the native camera app or supported third-party apps. Which functions are available depends on the feature and app.
Which should you choose for your kind of video?

Check phone fit, camera clearance and app support
For Osmo Mobile 7 series, DJI recommends phones 67–84 mm wide, 6.9–10 mm thick and 170–300 g in weight. A phone case is allowed only if the phone-plus-case thickness stays within 10 mm. These are model-series compatibility specifications, not general limits for all gimbals. Confirm the current supported-phone information for your exact phone and firmware on DJI’s compatibility page and the Osmo Mobile 7 Series FAQ.

Also check where the clamp sits relative to your iPhone’s cameras. DJI notes that a wide-angle camera may capture part of the gimbal, depending on the phone’s lens layout and clamp position. If wide framing matters, confirm clearance in the setup you plan to use rather than assuming every lens will remain unobstructed.
Do not assume every tracking or recording feature works in every camera app. DJI says Multifunctional Module tracking can work with the native camera app or supported third-party apps, while some ActiveTrack functions are available only through DJI Mimo. Resolution choices in Mimo depend on the phone API, so verify the specific feature and phone combination.

Mind magnets near the iPhone’s rear cameras
Apple advises avoiding accessories that use magnets or magnetic metal near the rear camera for best camera performance. DJI separately describes the Osmo Mobile 7 series’ magnetic design as a closed-loop system. These are distinct manufacturer statements; do not treat DJI’s model-specific description as general clearance for other magnetic accessories.
