Both list Apple’s A19 Pro chip and a ProMotion display with adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz, so those headline specifications alone do not establish which will perform better in everyday use.
What is the difference between iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro?
Apple’s published specifications show the main trade-off: portability and screen size favor Air, while rear-camera versatility favors 17 Pro. The figures below are from Apple’s current technical specification pages, accessed October 7, 2026. Apple’s comparison page also lists both models with A19 Pro and ProMotion up to 120 Hz.

Sources: Apple iPhone Air technical specifications, Apple iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications, and Apple’s iPhone comparison page. Apple calculates display size diagonally; its measurements use the display area within the rounded-corner shape, so the listed diagonal should not be read as a measure of the phone’s full front-face area.
Is iPhone Air thinner and lighter?
Yes. In Apple’s published measurements, Air weighs 165 g and is 5.64 mm deep, compared with 204 g and 8.75 mm for 17 Pro. That makes Air 39 g lighter and 3.11 mm thinner by those specifications. If you carry your phone all day or prefer a slimmer device in a pocket, those are meaningful differences to consider.

Which iPhone has the better camera?
The 17 Pro has the more versatile rear-camera hardware. Its Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto cameras give you more ways to frame a scene than Air’s single 48 MP Fusion rear camera. Apple lists optical zoom options for the Pro system; consult its technical specifications for the specific listed zoom details.
That hardware distinction makes 17 Pro the clearer choice if you often want Ultra Wide views or Telephoto framing. The specifications do not establish which phone takes better-looking photos in every situation, and there is no independent comparative camera test in the available evidence.

Are the displays and chips different?
Air has the larger listed display at 6.5 inches, versus 6.3 inches on 17 Pro. Both are OLED panels with Always-On and ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz, according to Apple. The listed features therefore point to a size choice rather than a difference in maximum refresh rate.
Both models also list Apple’s A19 Pro chip. A shared chip name is not proof that the phones deliver identical sustained performance or battery behavior; those outcomes depend on more than the processor label, and no independent performance comparison is established here.

What does Apple say about battery life?
Apple estimates iPhone Air video playback at up to 27 hours, and says it can reach up to 40 hours with the iPhone Air MagSafe Battery. These are Apple’s product estimates, not independent test results. The battery figure for 17 Pro is not established in the cited material, so this comparison cannot support a head-to-head endurance verdict.
The MagSafe Battery is therefore relevant if you are considering Air and want the longer stated playback estimate; it is an accessory-dependent figure, not the phone-alone estimate.

How should storage, price, and accessories affect the choice?
Storage
Apple’s specification pages list 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB configurations for both phones. Confirm which capacities are offered in your region before ordering, since local configurations can vary.
Price and availability
No current country-specific price or stock status is established here. Check Apple’s local store and retailers near purchase time rather than relying on a price from another market or an older listing.

Cases and screen protectors
The phones have different dimensions, so choose a case or screen protector labeled for the exact model and verify compatibility before buying. Do not assume an accessory made for one fits the other.
Is the iPhone Air better than the iPhone 17 Pro?
Choose Air if thinness, low weight, and a slightly larger display matter more to you than having multiple rear-camera lenses. Choose 17 Pro if Ultra Wide and Telephoto framing options are priorities. The specifications do not settle which is faster in real use or which lasts longer in a direct comparison, so base the decision on the features that are documented and check local pricing before purchase.
