Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series recorded a reported 12% sales increase in China around launch, but that figure compares different time windows: its first three days on sale with the iPhone 17 Pro series’ entire first week. The result arrived weeks before Apple’s first foldable iPhone, iPhone Duo, was scheduled to go on sale in China; the timing alone does not show that anticipation of Duo drove Pro sales.
What the 12% China sales figure measures
Counterpoint Research reported on September 30, 2026, that iPhone 18 Pro series sales in China were up 12% year over year in launch week. MacRumors, attributing the result to Counterpoint, specifies the comparison: the iPhone 18 Pro series’ first three days after its September 18 launch exceeded the iPhone 17 Pro series’ full first week in the prior year by 12%. This is not a like-for-like comparison of two full launch weeks.
The distinction matters because the reported figure compares a shorter period for the newer phones with a longer one for their predecessors. It describes the result reported by Counterpoint; it does not, by itself, explain why sales differed.

How the Pro launch lined up with iPhone Duo
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. In mainland China, preorders began September 12 and sales began September 18, according to Apple’s announcement. Counterpoint’s China launch-week measure covers September 14–20, so it includes several days before the phones went on sale as well as the first three days afterward.

Apple also announced iPhone Duo on September 9. It said China was among the markets where the foldable phone was scheduled to become available beginning October 23, with preorders starting October 16. That puts the Pro launch ahead of Duo’s planned China availability, but the dates establish sequence—not a cause-and-effect relationship between Duo anticipation and Pro purchases.
What Apple’s 33% China market share means
Apple held 33% of China’s smartphone market during the week of September 14–20, according to MacRumors’ account of Counterpoint’s data. This is a share for one specific week, not an annual market-share figure. The period also overlaps with the iPhone 18 Pro launch and includes pre-sale days, so it should not be read as a measure of Pro sales alone.

How the announced models differ
The clearest comparison from Apple’s announcements is price and form factor. The Pro models are conventional iPhones; Duo is a foldable with two screens. The starting prices below are Apple China figures announced in 2026, not independently assessed value comparisons.

What the report does—and does not—show
The available figures show that the Pro series had a strong reported start against the prior generation’s launch-week result, and that Apple had a substantial share of China’s smartphone market in the same named week. They do not establish that iPhone Duo’s announcement boosted Pro demand, nor do they isolate the effect of any particular product feature, pricing decision, or consumer trend.
MacRumors has described Chinese consumers as having a stronger appetite for foldables than consumers elsewhere, but its cited coverage does not provide a quantified comparison or underlying evidence for that claim. It is therefore not a measured explanation for the Pro sales result. Apple’s launch statements about product upgrades likewise do not independently account for the reported sales increase.
