The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the better fit if you want a conventional large-screen phone, iOS, and Apple’s ecosystem. Choose the vivo X Fold5 if you value a much larger screen when opened and are comfortable with a foldable. Neither is a universal winner: these phones suit different ways of using a phone, and there is no matched independent test here to rank their cameras, speed, or battery life.
What is the main difference?
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a single-screen phone with a 6.9-inch OLED display. The vivo X Fold5 is a book-style foldable: it has a 6.53-inch cover screen for use while closed and an 8.03-inch internal AMOLED display when opened. Those measurements describe different form factors, not directly interchangeable screen experiences.
vivo lists the X Fold5 at 217 g in gray and 226 g in white; Apple lists the iPhone at 249 g. The X Fold5’s unfolded screen is its clearest use-case advantage, while the iPhone offers a conventional slab design. vivo’s X Fold5 specifications and Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max technical specifications provide the listed figures.
How do the specifications compare?
| Feature | iPhone 18 Pro Max | vivo X Fold5 |
|---|---|---|
| Displays | 6.9-inch OLED | 8.03-inch inner AMOLED; 6.53-inch cover AMOLED |
| Weight | 249 g | 217 g (gray) or 226 g (white), as listed by vivo |
| Platform and chip | iOS 27; A20 Pro | Android 15 with Funtouch OS 15; Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 |
| Memory and storage | Storage tiers: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB; RAM not stated in Apple’s cited material | 16GB RAM and 512GB storage on vivo’s global parameter page; no expandable ROM listed |
| Battery and charging | Apple describes improved battery life; capacity and comparable measured runtime not stated in the cited material | 6,000mAh typical capacity (5,815mAh rated equivalent); up to 80W wired and 40W wireless charging |
| Rear cameras | 48MP Fusion Main with variable aperture and new Pro camera features | 50MP + 50MP + 50MP rear cameras |
| Front cameras | Not stated in the cited material | Two 20MP front cameras |

| Published price and availability | Apple announced a US$1,299 U.S. starting price and staged September 2026 availability | Price, official stock, warranty, and service depend on country and are not established by the cited global specification page |
These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not a controlled head-to-head test. Chip names and RAM figures alone do not establish which phone is faster in daily use; camera resolution does not establish which takes better photos.

Which phone has the better screen for your use?
Choose the iPhone for a familiar large-phone layout
The iPhone’s 6.9-inch OLED screen is a large display in a conventional phone body. It avoids opening a device to reach its largest screen, making it the more straightforward choice if you prefer the usual slab format.
Choose the vivo for more room when unfolded
The X Fold5’s internal 8.03-inch display gives you a larger canvas for viewing content or working with apps that make good use of a foldable screen. The 6.53-inch cover display remains available when the phone is closed. This is a screen-size and form-factor advantage, not a guarantee that every app or workflow will be better on the foldable.

How do iOS and Android affect the choice?
Apple lists iOS 27 and the A20 Pro for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. vivo lists Android 15 with Funtouch OS 15 and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the X Fold5. If you already rely on Apple devices and services, the iPhone is the natural ecosystem fit; if you prefer Android, the X Fold5 runs Android with vivo’s interface. The listed platforms do not by themselves establish a performance winner.
Apple offers four named iPhone storage tiers: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. vivo’s global parameter page lists the X Fold5 as 16GB RAM plus 512GB storage and does not list expandable ROM. Pick storage based on how much you keep on-device, such as photos, video, and downloaded media.

What can be concluded about battery and cameras?
Battery capacity and charging
vivo specifies a 6,000mAh typical dual-cell capacity, equivalent to 5,815mAh rated, for the X Fold5, with up to 80W wired FlashCharge and 40W wireless FlashCharge. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max has improved battery life, but the cited Apple material does not provide a capacity figure or a comparable measured runtime. Capacity alone cannot establish which lasts longer in use.
Camera hardware
Apple lists a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture and new Pro camera features. vivo lists three 50MP rear cameras and two 20MP front cameras. Those specifications do not settle image quality, particularly across different camera systems. No controlled camera comparison between these exact models is established here, so choose based on a reliable side-by-side review if camera results are decisive.

What do the water-resistance ratings mean?
Apple lists IP68 under IEC 60529 and specifies a laboratory test of up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. vivo lists IP5X/IPX8/IPX9 on its parameter page and separately markets IPX9+. These are manufacturer-reported ratings from different ingress tests, not a direct durability ranking. Apple and vivo both warn that resistance can diminish through wear; do not treat either rating or marketing language as advice to deliberately expose the phone to water.

Those are launch-announcement details, not a current quote for every market.

The cited vivo global specification material does not establish a target-country X Fold5 price, official stock, warranty, or repair service. Before choosing it, confirm the exact regional SKU, local seller authorization, support terms, carrier bands, and SIM requirements. For either phone, check current local price and stock rather than assuming U.S. pricing or launch timing applies in your country.
