Upgrade only if a specific change fixes a problem you have. The iPhone 18 Pro Max brings a larger display, a new variable-aperture camera feature, and higher Apple-stated video-playback time than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. But Apple’s specifications alone do not prove that it takes better photos in every situation or that every owner will notice a performance gain. If your 15 Pro Max still meets your needs, keeping it is a reasonable choice.
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. This comparison is based on Apple’s published specifications and claims, not a hands-on, side-by-side test.
What changes between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max?
Both are large-screen Pro Max phones with OLED displays and ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. The newer phone’s clearest documented differences are its 6.9-inch display, variable aperture on its 48MP Fusion Main camera, A20 Pro chip, and Apple’s higher stated video-playback figure. Apple lists the 15 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display, A17 Pro chip, and up to 29 hours of video playback.

Will the larger screen make a meaningful difference?
The 18 Pro Max adds 0.2 inches of listed diagonal screen size. Both models are OLED and support ProMotion up to 120Hz, so moving to the newer phone is not an upgrade from a standard-refresh display to a high-refresh one. The extra size may matter if you regularly read, watch video, or work on-screen and want more display area; it is less compelling if the 15 Pro Max already feels comfortable to use.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro Max have a better camera?
What Apple lists as new
Apple identifies variable aperture as a new camera feature for the iPhone 18 Pro generation and lists a 48MP Fusion Main camera. That is a hardware and specification change, not independent proof of better photos in all lighting or for every subject. The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison of image quality between the two phones.
Who may benefit
Consider upgrading if variable aperture addresses a camera limitation you encounter, or if you specifically want the new camera controls. If you are happy with the 15 Pro Max’s camera results, Apple’s feature description by itself is not a reason to expect a visible improvement in every shot.

How much longer does the 18 Pro Max last?
Apple states up to 43 hours of video playback for the 18 Pro Max on its UK product information page, compared with up to 29 hours for the 15 Pro Max on Apple Support. These are manufacturer estimates under Apple test conditions, not a promise of everyday battery life. Apple’s comparison page gives different test dates for certain battery measures: July 2026 for iPhone 18 Pro models and August 2023 for iPhone 15 generation models. If your 15 Pro Max routinely runs short before the end of your day, the newer phone’s stated endurance is relevant, but it cannot predict your personal improvement. If battery life is already adequate, the published maximums alone do not establish that an upgrade is worthwhile.

Is the A20 Pro a reason to upgrade from A17 Pro?
Apple lists A20 Pro in the 18 Pro generation and A17 Pro in the 15 Pro Max. The cited sources do not include an independent performance comparison, so they do not establish how much faster the newer phone is for a particular app or task. Apple’s launch announcement also describes a next-generation vapor chamber, but the available information here does not quantify its effect in sustained use.
Apple says the 18 Pro models use iOS 27 and describes Apple Intelligence and Siri AI availability. Feature access can depend on language, region, and rollout status; check Apple’s current availability information for the features you intend to use rather than assuming every capability is available to every owner.

What will upgrading cost?
Apple UK’s September 2026 launch announcement gave a starting price of £1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max and mentioned trade-in and carrier options. That is a regional launch figure, not a current universal price or a guaranteed trade-in value (Apple UK launch announcement).
Before deciding, compare the price you can actually pay in your market with a confirmed trade-in valuation and any carrier terms. The useful number is your net cost after eligible offers, not the launch price in isolation. Recheck live pricing and eligibility because offers and values can change.

Should you keep your iPhone 15 Pro Max?
Upgrade if
- You want the larger display and expect to make regular use of the extra screen area.
- You have a specific camera need that variable aperture is intended to address.
- Battery endurance is a recurring problem, and you are comfortable treating Apple’s playback figure as a test estimate rather than a guarantee.
- Your confirmed net upgrade cost makes those changes worthwhile to you.
Keep it if
- Your current screen, camera, and battery already meet your needs.
- You would be upgrading mainly on the assumption of a major speed or photo-quality gain that the cited specifications do not independently demonstrate.
- The price after verified trade-in or carrier terms is too high for the features you would actually use.
Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, said the company made advances in “camera, performance, battery, and intelligence.” That is Apple’s description of its product priorities, not an independent assessment of the upgrade’s value.
