What SOS means on an iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple groups “SOS,” “No Service,” and “Searching” as statuses indicating that an iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. In Australia, Canada, and the United States, SOS may still allow emergency calls through other carriers; it does not mean normal cellular service is available. The message is a connection status, not a diagnosis. A local outage, account or plan issue, an inactive line, SIM/eSIM provisioning, software, or a device fault can all require different remedies. The status by itself does not establish that the phone needs replacement.
If you use AT&T, install the model-specific update first
AT&T’s support notice, last updated October 2, 2026, says Apple released iOS 27.0.1 to address an issue that may affect calls, texts, data, and 911 calls on some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. - Connect to Wi-Fi if possible, then go to Settings > General > Software Update and install iOS 27.0.1 if offered.
- After updating, open Settings > General > About. If a carrier-settings update is available, follow the on-screen prompt. AT&T says this may also install automatically.
Tom’s Guide reported on October 2, 2026, that some customers had described AT&T connectivity problems, sometimes appearing as SOS, and that AT&T had urged affected customers to update. Its report said the cause was unclear and Apple had not responded to the publication at that time. That contemporaneous report does not establish a hardware defect or a universal problem. Try these checks in order
1. Handle an emergency first
If you are in immediate danger, try the local emergency number. In supported circumstances and regions, SOS may connect an emergency call through another carrier. AT&T also advises trying 911 when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable; if the call does not connect, an emergency satellite-text option may appear on the iPhone. 2. Refresh the cellular connection
- Open Control Center or Settings, turn on Airplane Mode, and leave it on for at least 15 seconds.
- Turn Airplane Mode off and wait for the phone to reconnect.
- Restart the iPhone if SOS remains.
3. Check your line and SIM
For a dual-SIM iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular and make sure the line you intend to use is turned on. Ask your carrier to confirm that the plan and line are set up correctly and, for eSIM, that activation and provisioning are complete. If you use a physical SIM and it is damaged or unsuitable, Apple recommends asking the carrier about a replacement SIM.
4. Have your carrier check service and account issues
Contact the carrier and ask it to check for a local outage, account standing, plan setup, device blocking, and any required IMEI registration. Apple notes that only the carrier can access and manage account details. If you use a carrier other than AT&T, follow its current advice rather than assuming AT&T’s reported issue applies to your phone.

5. Update iOS and carrier settings
For general Apple guidance, check Settings > General > Software Update for the latest iOS version offered to your phone. Then check Settings > General > About for a carrier-settings prompt. Apple says carrier-settings updates can improve cellular connectivity and performance.

If your carrier confirms there is no account or network problem and SOS persists, ask Apple to diagnose the device. Apple says service may be needed when hardware is suspected; that does not mean replacement is guaranteed. You can arrange an inspection at a Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider, or use mail-in service. Bring the carrier’s findings and note when SOS appears, whether it changes by location, and whether the affected line uses SIM or eSIM. Those details can help distinguish a service or activation problem from an issue that warrants device diagnostics. Any replacement decision should follow inspection and a review of applicable coverage.

The cited Apple and AT&T guidance does not give a verified affected-device count or failure rate. AT&T describes an issue that may affect some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones, while the October 2 report describes customer complaints and says the cause was unclear at that time.
