The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max share Apple’s A20 Pro chip and new variable-aperture 48MP main camera. The Pro is the more compact, less expensive choice; the Pro Max costs more and is the better fit if you prioritize a larger screen and longer battery life. In Tom’s Guide’s controlled 5G web test, the Pro Max lasted 2 hours 10 minutes longer, but that result is a lab comparison—not a promise of everyday runtime.

What’s new in the iPhone 18 Pro series?

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Preorders opened September 12, and availability began September 18. The headline changes are a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, an A20 Pro platform, a next-generation vapor chamber, and a smaller Dynamic Island. The outer design remains familiar: TechRadar describes an aluminum body and rear camera plateau carried over from the previous generation, with new finishes and greater weight.

Both models share the same core chip and camera proposition. Apple lists black, silver, glacier, and burgundy finishes, and storage capacities of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Storage capacity does not distinguish the Pro from the Pro Max.

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if size and price matter more

The Pro gives you the same headline chip and main-camera features in a smaller 6.3-inch-class phone. At 211g, it is also lighter than the 249g Pro Max. Choose it if you prefer a more manageable device for one-handed use or want the lower launch price without giving up the shared camera platform.

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max for screen space and endurance

The Pro Max’s 6.9-inch-class display gives you more room for video, photos, and multitasking. It is the endurance-oriented option in Tom’s Guide’s test, but its larger screen comes with a 38g weight difference and a $100 higher U.S. launch price. The extra size and weight are trade-offs, not incidental details, if you carry your phone in a small pocket or use it one-handed.

How good is the iPhone 18 Pro camera?

The main camera’s variable aperture is the series’ most distinctive imaging change. It lets the lens open to admit more light and create shallower depth of field, or stop down to retain more detail across a scene. Tom’s Guide describes four manual aperture choices and found the control useful for portraits and scenes where foreground and background sharpness matter. Its review found strong everyday and low-light photography, while noting that Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra had an advantage at very long zoom. The best choice depends on the subject and shooting style, not one universal camera ranking.

Apple also announced upgraded Photographic Styles and video features. IT Pro notes capture up to 4K at 120fps and stabilization, while also identifying a limitation in minimum video shutter speed. It describes a camera launch control and configurable Action button; how useful those controls are depends on your workflow.

Performance, display, and connectivity

Both phones use Apple’s A20 Pro and a next-generation vapor chamber. Tom’s Guide measured 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stress-test stability at 62.8% for Pro and 79.4% for Pro Max; the outlet’s previous-generation comparison scores were 61.1% and 65.2%, respectively. In 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited, Tom’s Guide reported 62 frames per second for Pro and 67.9fps for Pro Max. These are results from named synthetic benchmarks, not a guarantee of identical performance in every game or workload.

Apple specifies OLED displays with ProMotion up to 120Hz. Tom’s Guide measured 2,314 nits on the Pro and 2,326 nits on the Pro Max in a 25% window setup. Those are reviewer measurements under that setup, not Apple’s rating categories.

Apple says both models use its N1 wireless networking chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Apple also says the C2 cellular modem provides faster uploads than C1X while using 15% less energy; the company’s comparison is its own claim. Apple says mmWave support is available in the U.S., and notes that some capabilities vary by geography.

How long does the iPhone 18 Pro battery last?

In Tom’s Guide’s continuous 5G web-surfing test at 150 nits, the iPhone 18 Pro averaged 16 hours 17 minutes and the Pro Max averaged 18 hours 27 minutes. In the same outlet’s comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro averaged 15 hours 21 minutes and the 17 Pro Max 17 hours 54 minutes. These are Tom’s Guide test results under specific conditions; screen use, signal, settings, and workload affect real-world battery life.

Separately, Apple says the Pro Max delivers six more hours of video playback than the iPhone 17 Pro Max in Apple’s comparison. That is a manufacturer-defined video playback comparison, not the same test as Tom’s Guide’s web-surfing measurement.

Apple says Apple Intelligence with iOS 27 is available on supported devices set to supported languages. Apple described Siri AI as rolling out in beta, initially in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support coming in October 2026. Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth it?

The Pro series makes the strongest case for people who will use the variable aperture, want the A20 Pro platform, or value the tested battery gains—especially on the Max. The Pro Max is the better fit when screen size and endurance outweigh comfort and cost. The Pro is the sensible choice when you want the same core chip and camera features in a smaller, lighter phone for less at launch.

For owners of recent Pro iPhones, the familiar exterior makes appearance alone a weak reason to upgrade. The decision turns on whether variable aperture, battery improvements, or the new software capabilities matter enough to justify replacing a recent device. Long-term durability, repairability, failure rates, and battery aging are not established by these early post-launch reviews.
