For U.S. buyers, the iPhone 16 is the better savings pick only when it is meaningfully cheaper at the same storage capacity. The current price snapshot puts the iPhone 16 at $799 for 128GB and the iPhone 17 at $899 for 256GB—so the nominal $100 difference also buys twice the starting storage, plus a smoother display and upgraded cameras. If you want 256GB, 120Hz scrolling, or better ultra-wide, macro, and selfie-camera options, lean toward the iPhone 17. If 128GB is enough and the smaller screen appeals, the iPhone 16 can make sense at a genuine discount.

These are U.S. prices observed or reported as of October 4, 2026, not guaranteed offers. Check current listings and compare equivalent configurations, carrier terms, and seller conditions before buying.

Compare the price at the same storage capacity

Apple’s U.S. store lists the iPhone 17 from $899 with 256GB, while Tom’s Guide reported a $799 starting price for the iPhone 16 with 128GB in 2026. The $100 headline gap is therefore not a like-for-like comparison: the newer phone starts with twice the storage. Tom’s Guide’s report also says Apple raised prices on older phones by $100, so earlier $699 and $799 figures for these models are out of date.

Model and configuration Price in the October 4, 2026 U.S. snapshot What the figure represents
iPhone 16, 128GB $799 Starting price reported by Tom’s Guide in 2026; not a live retailer quote.
iPhone 17, 256GB $899 Starting price on Apple’s U.S. store listing observed October 4, 2026.

Before deciding that the iPhone 17 costs just $100 more, look for the iPhone 16 at 256GB and compare it with the iPhone 17 at 256GB. The available evidence does not establish a current same-storage iPhone 16 price, so use the actual listing you can buy rather than assuming a price for that configuration. Promotions, trade-ins, refurbished or used condition, and carrier subsidies can change the effective cost.

What the iPhone 17 adds over the iPhone 16

A smoother, slightly larger display

Apple lists a 6.1-inch OLED display for iPhone 16 and a 6.3-inch OLED display for iPhone 17. The 17 adds ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, an Always-On display, and outdoor peak brightness up to 3,000 nits; Apple lists the iPhone 16 at up to 2,000 nits outdoors and does not list ProMotion for it. That makes the iPhone 17 the more appealing choice if you value fluid scrolling or visibility outdoors. The iPhone 16 remains the smaller option. Apple’s diagonal screen figures are not a simple measurement of the rectangular display area, so the listed sizes should not be read as a direct measure of how much larger the screen looks.

More capable ultra-wide, macro, and front cameras

Both phones have a 48MP main camera and 2x optical-quality telephoto framing. The iPhone 16 pairs its main camera with a 12MP ultra-wide; the iPhone 17 upgrades that ultra-wide to 48MP and adds 48MP macro photography. On the front, the 17 has an 18MP Center Stage camera, compared with the 16’s 12MP TrueDepth camera. The strongest camera reasons to pay more are therefore ultra-wide detail, close-up photography, and front-camera flexibility—not a claimed leap in ordinary main-camera photos, where the headline resolution is the same.

More starting storage and a newer chip

Apple lists the iPhone 17 with 256GB starting storage and the iPhone 16 with 128GB in the price comparison. The 17 uses Apple’s A19 chip; the 16 uses A18. Those specifications establish a newer chip generation, but they do not by themselves establish a particular real-world speed or battery-efficiency advantage. Consider how much room your photos, video, apps, and downloaded media need, then compare the actual storage configurations and prices available to you.

A higher manufacturer video-playback rating

Apple rates the iPhone 17 for up to 30 hours of video playback and the iPhone 16 for up to 22 hours. These are Apple’s manufacturer ratings under defined test conditions, not a guarantee of everyday runtime for a particular person. Use the figures as a specification comparison, not as independently measured battery endurance.

What the two phones share

Both support Apple Intelligence, include the Action button and Camera Control, and have IP68 water- and dust-resistance claims. The iPhone 17 is one generation newer, so buying it starts your ownership period with a newer model. Apple does not promise a fixed number of years of iOS updates in the cited specifications, however, so a specific support end date cannot be established from them.

Which iPhone should you buy?

Choose the iPhone 16 if saving money matters most

The iPhone 16 is a sensible choice if 128GB meets your needs, you prefer its 6.1-inch size, and its actual price is substantially lower than a comparable iPhone 17 configuration. Its 48MP main camera, shared core capabilities, and smaller display may be enough if the newer model’s screen and camera upgrades are not priorities.

Apple iPhone 17, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Black- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Choose the iPhone 17 if its upgrades match how you use a phone

Spend more on the iPhone 17 if you want the 256GB starting capacity, adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, the brighter outdoor display, or its higher-resolution ultra-wide and macro cameras. Its front-camera changes and longer manufacturer-rated video playback may also matter to your choice, with the understanding that the playback rating is not a prediction of your personal daily battery life.

Use the same-storage price gap as the tie-breaker

After matching storage, compare the real prices and purchase conditions. If the iPhone 16 still costs meaningfully less and its size and capabilities suit you, it is the savings pick. If the price gap narrows, the iPhone 17’s added storage and display and camera upgrades make it the stronger value for buyers who will use them. Prices and stock can change, so verify the listing at checkout.
