For most buyers, the iPhone 16 is the stronger choice if its price premium is reasonable: it supports Apple Intelligence, adds Camera Control and macro photography, and has a newer A18 chip. The iPhone 15 is still a good buy if it costs substantially less and you do not need those features. The screens are nearly identical, and both phones have a 48MP main camera and USB-C. Compare current prices for the same storage, condition, carrier status, and seller before deciding.

What is different between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15?
Apple Intelligence and the A18 chip
The iPhone 16 uses Apple’s A18 chip, while the iPhone 15 uses A16 Bionic. The practical distinction for this buying decision is Apple Intelligence compatibility: Apple lists the iPhone 16 as compatible, but the iPhone 15 is not included as a compatible model. Feature availability can vary by language and region; consult Apple’s iOS 26 feature information for availability details. If you do not plan to use Apple Intelligence, that compatibility difference may not justify paying more by itself.
Camera controls and macro photography
Both phones have a 48MP main camera. The iPhone 16 adds Camera Control, macro photography, and Photographic Styles 2. Its 2× camera option is enabled by the main camera; it is not a separate dedicated telephoto lens. The difference is therefore more about camera controls and shooting options than a simple increase in main-camera resolution.

Battery estimates and MagSafe charging
Apple estimates up to 22 hours of video playback and up to 18 hours of streamed video playback for iPhone 16. For iPhone 15, Apple’s figures are up to 20 hours and up to 16 hours, respectively. These are manufacturer maximum playback estimates, not independent real-world test results or guaranteed daily runtimes.
Both phones have USB-C. Apple’s comparison lists MagSafe wireless charging up to 22W for iPhone 16 and up to 15W for iPhone 15 under the stated adapter conditions. A compatible USB-C cable and power adapter you already own may be suitable; Apple notes that a power adapter may be sold separately.

Which iPhone should you buy?
Choose iPhone 16 if you want the newer features
- You expect to use Apple Intelligence and its features are available in your language and region.
- You want Camera Control or macro photography.
- The price difference is small enough that the newer capabilities are worth paying for.
- You value Apple’s higher stated video playback estimates, while recognizing they do not predict your exact everyday battery life.
Choose iPhone 15 if the discount matters more
- It is substantially cheaper than an equivalent iPhone 16.
- You do not need Apple Intelligence, Camera Control, or macro photography.
- The device’s condition, warranty, carrier status, and seller are acceptable.
- You want a 6.1-inch OLED screen, a 48MP main camera, and USB-C without paying for the newer model’s additions.
How to compare prices fairly
There is no established current street price that makes one model the better deal in every market. Compare the same storage capacity and purchase type, and check the details that can change the real value:
- Storage capacity and whether both listings are new, used, or refurbished.
- Carrier lock or network compatibility.
- Warranty coverage, return terms, and seller reputation.
- Included accessories and whether you already have a compatible charger.
- Final local price, including applicable fees or carrier conditions.
If the iPhone 16’s premium buys features you will use, it is the stronger choice. If the iPhone 15 is meaningfully cheaper and its missing features do not matter to you, it can be the better value.
