An August 2024 leak reportedly showed an iPhone 16 Pro box seal marked “Assembled in India.” The image was not independently authenticated, so it is evidence of what one label appeared to say—not proof that every iPhone 16 Pro was assembled in India. Separate reporting at the time said Apple planned to assemble Pro models in India through Foxconn, making the label plausible.
What did the iPhone 16 Pro box label leak show?
On August 21, 2024, 9to5Mac reported that a photo shared by Weibo leaker “OvO” appeared to show an iPhone 16 Pro retail-box seal with the product name and the words “Assembled in India.” 9to5Mac said it could not vouch for the image’s veracity, while noting that other sources corroborated reports of an India-assembled iPhone 16 Pro. 9to5Mac’s report therefore establishes what the image was claimed to depict, not that the photographed seal was genuine.
Was the label real, and did Apple make the iPhone 16 Pro in India?
The photo’s authenticity was not confirmed in the cited coverage. However, the wording matched independent reporting published before the leak: on July 26, 2024, Moneycontrol reported that Apple planned to assemble the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in India through Foxconn for the first time, with India-assembled units intended to be available after launch. That reporting supports the plausibility of the label, but it does not authenticate the photograph or establish the country of assembly for any particular retail unit. Moneycontrol’s July 2024 report
What Apple confirmed—and what it did not
Apple’s September 9, 2024 announcement officially introduced iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple said pre-orders would begin September 13 and availability would start September 20. Its announcement listed 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities for both models. It did not authenticate the leaked box seal or say that every unit was assembled in India. Does “Assembled in India” mean the whole phone was made there?
No. The phrase identifies assembly, not the origin of every component or every step in the supply chain. And a label said to be on one box cannot establish the manufacturing origin of the entire iPhone 16 Pro line. The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: India assembly was planned for Pro models, and a leaked image allegedly showed a box seal bearing that wording.

Apple’s September 2024 environmental report describes packaging—not the phone’s assembly location. It says iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max packaging is 100 percent fiber-based, contains at least 66 percent recycled content in its fiber packaging, and is about 6 percent smaller in volume than the prior-generation Pro packaging. The report’s product-launch data uses the U.S. configuration and includes packaging in carbon-footprint calculations. These details are separate from the unverified country-of-assembly label.
