In the United States, iPhone 14 models have no physical SIM card slot: they use eSIM, a digital carrier profile, for cellular service. You can still use two phone lines on a supported setup, but your carrier must support eSIM activation. The configuration differs by market, so check the exact model and country before buying or switching.
What changed with the iPhone 14 SIM slot?
Apple says U.S.-sold iPhone 14 models are activated with eSIM and do not support physical SIM cards. Instead of removing a small card and moving it to another phone, you activate a carrier-provided digital profile on the iPhone. Apple describes eSIMs as tamper-resistant and tied to the device; that changes the risk of someone removing a SIM card, but it does not eliminate account or phone-number takeover risks.
This is a regional distinction, not a statement about every iPhone 14 worldwide. SIM configurations vary by market. Confirm the exact model and purchase region with Apple or the seller before relying on a physical SIM tray or a particular eSIM configuration. What eSIM means for activation and your carrier
The iPhone contains the eSIM capability, but your carrier provides the cellular plan and must support eSIM activation. Before buying a U.S. iPhone 14 for a particular plan, ask the carrier whether it supports eSIM for your account and how it handles activation or transfer. Apple’s eSIM setup guidance covers carrier activation and supported transfer methods. Moving service from a non-iPhone smartphone may require contacting the carrier, and setup generally requires an internet connection.

Apple’s October 2022 newsroom announcement said eSIM is more secure than physical SIMs and can often be activated during new-iPhone setup with on-screen instructions, without contacting the carrier. That describes many activations, not every carrier or transfer: follow your carrier’s current process if automatic setup is unavailable.
Can you use two phone numbers?
Yes, if the carrier plans and setup support it. Apple lists two active eSIMs on iPhone 14 and the ability to store eight or more eSIMs. These are different counts: two profiles can be active as lines at once, while additional profiles can be stored for later use. A stored profile is not a third active line.

Using two carriers has an additional condition: Apple says the iPhone must be unlocked, unless both plans are from the same carrier. Carrier support still determines whether the plans can be activated and transferred. See Apple’s Dual SIM with eSIM guidance for setup details.

A supported iPhone can use two active eSIMs while traveling, for example a home line and a travel line. Whether that works for you depends on the destination provider’s coverage and plan terms, your carrier’s support, and whether the phone is unlocked when the two lines come from different carriers. Apple advises arranging Wi-Fi or hotspot access for setup in most cases, since an internet connection may be needed to add the travel profile. Review Apple’s international travel eSIM guidance and confirm current availability and conditions with the provider.

What to check before switching or buying
- Model and region: Verify whether the exact iPhone 14 model you plan to buy has a physical SIM tray and which SIM formats it supports.
- Carrier compatibility: Confirm eSIM support for your specific carrier plan and account, not just general eSIM availability.
- Activation or transfer: Ask how your existing number will move. A transfer from a non-iPhone may require carrier assistance; have internet access during setup.
- Two-carrier use: Check that the phone is unlocked if you want plans from different carriers.
- Travel setup: Confirm destination coverage and plan terms, and arrange Wi-Fi or hotspot access if needed to install the travel eSIM.
