For most professionals choosing one primary work device, the MacBook Air is the safer default if the job depends on desktop applications, extended typing and trackpad use, or multiple external monitors. The iPad Pro is a better fit when the work benefits from a tablet, touch or stylus input, or apps built for iPadOS. The deciding factor is whether your specific apps, files, and peripherals work the way your job requires—not which device has the more appealing specification.

Start with the apps and workflow your job requires

Before comparing screens or battery estimates, list the software and processes you rely on. Check whether each essential app is available on iPadOS and whether its iPad version supports the features you actually use. Also confirm that your files can be imported, edited, exported, and shared as required.

For specialized work, check any dependencies that can be easy to overlook: plug-ins, fonts, organization-managed software, file-handling rules, and connected equipment. Apple’s device specifications describe hardware and platform features, but they do not establish compatibility for every third-party professional app. The iPad Pro can support serious professional work; whether it can replace a MacBook Air depends on the particular job.

If a required app or workflow is uncertain, verify it before making the iPad your only computer. A missing must-have feature is a deal-breaker that cannot be offset by a display or portability advantage.

How do you work: keyboard and pointer, or touch and stylus?

MacBook Air: a built-in laptop setup

Apple lists a backlit keyboard and Force Touch trackpad in the 15-inch MacBook Air M5 specifications. That integrated setup suits work involving long stretches of typing, pointer navigation, and conventional laptop use. Apple’s MacBook Air (15-inch, M5) technical specifications identify this model as introduced in 2026.

iPad Pro: a tablet-first setup

The iPad Pro is a tablet running iPadOS, making direct screen interaction a natural part of its form factor. That can be useful for work built around touch or stylus input. If you want to use it like a laptop, account for the keyboard and any other accessories your workflow needs; do not assume the tablet alone provides the same input setup as a laptop.

External monitors and desk work

The M5 MacBook Air and M5 iPad Pro differ in the external-display setups Apple documents. These are manufacturer-supported limits, not a guarantee that every monitor, cable, or adapter will work in every configuration.

Device External display support documented by Apple What to consider
15-inch MacBook Air M5 Up to two external displays simultaneously in addition to its built-in display. Apple’s examples include two displays up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz; a single display can be up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz, or 4K at 240Hz. Check the specific resolution and refresh rate you need. Apple’s MacBook Air display-support page was published March 10, 2026.
iPad Pro M5 One external display, up to 6K at 60Hz or 5K at 120Hz. Apple also describes an extended-display experience with multiple app windows on supported iPad models. That does not change the documented maximum of one external display. See Apple’s iPad USB-C connection guide and iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) technical specifications.

If your desk workflow requires two external monitors, the published M5 MacBook Air support is the clearer fit. If you use one display, the iPad Pro may still work well, but confirm the monitor, connection method, and any needed accessories for your setup.

Battery estimates are not a head-to-head test

Apple quotes up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback for the iPad Pro M5. The company says its tests used preproduction units in August and September 2025; actual results vary. For the 2026 MacBook Air M5, Apple quotes up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 18 hours of video streaming. These figures describe different tasks and come from separate manufacturer test scenarios, so they are not directly comparable and should not be treated as guaranteed workday runtimes. Can an iPad Pro replace a MacBook Air for work?

It can for some workflows, but the device specifications alone cannot settle that question for every profession. Verify your must-have apps, features, files, peripherals, and any organization requirements. If all of them work on iPadOS and the tablet’s input and display setup suits your day, it may serve as your primary work device. If a required tool is unavailable or the workflow remains uncertain, the MacBook Air is the safer primary-computer choice.
