Choose the MacBook Air M5 if your work depends on a traditional laptop setup: macOS apps, a built-in keyboard and trackpad, or a desk with multiple external displays. Choose the iPad Pro M5 if touch, drawing, handwriting, or using a tablet without a keyboard is central to your day. For travel, compare the complete kit you need to do your work—not just the tablet or laptop on its own.
Both families use Apple’s M5 chip, but they run different operating systems and support different ways of working. The iPad Pro runs iPadOS 26; the MacBook Air runs macOS Tahoe. That distinction matters more than the shared chip name.

These battery figures come from different published conditions, not a matched test of both devices doing the same work. They cannot establish which lasts longer for your particular workload.

Choose MacBook Air for a laptop-first workflow
The MacBook Air is the more straightforward choice if you expect to sit down and type: its keyboard and trackpad are built in, and it runs macOS. Before buying, check that the specific desktop or work applications, file-handling steps, and peripherals you rely on are supported by your required macOS version.

It is also the clearer fit if you regularly connect a desk setup with multiple monitors. Apple specifies support for up to two external displays through Thunderbolt 4. The laptop includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports as well as MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack.
Choose iPad Pro for touch, Pencil, and tablet use
The iPad Pro is the stronger fit when you want to draw, handwrite notes, mark up documents, or work directly on a touchscreen. Apple says M5 iPad Pro models are compatible with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C); Pencil is an optional accessory, not part of every buyer’s required setup. Apple describes Pencil use for illustration, note-taking, and annotation.

For laptop-style typing and pointer control, the compatible Magic Keyboard adds a keyboard, trackpad, and function row. It turns the iPad into a more laptop-like setup, but it is an additional accessory to buy and carry. It does not change iPadOS into macOS, so confirm that your apps and work procedures function as needed on iPadOS.
Which is better for travel?
There is no universal travel winner. The iPad can be a good fit if your travel work is primarily touch-oriented or you prefer a tablet, but the kit grows if you need a keyboard and Pencil. The MacBook Air is ready for typing without an add-on keyboard, although it remains a laptop rather than a standalone tablet.

Make the comparison around a typical workday away from home. List the tasks you actually need to finish, then identify the devices and accessories required for each. A lighter bare device is not necessarily the more convenient choice if it needs extra gear to complete your work.
- Mostly email, documents, browser work, and sustained typing: the Air’s integrated keyboard and trackpad may make the simpler carry setup.
- Handwritten notes, sketching, annotation, or touch-first tasks: the iPad Pro has the more natural input options, with Pencil availability depending on which accessory you choose.
- Typing on iPad is essential: include the Magic Keyboard in your cost and packing list rather than comparing the bare iPad with a complete laptop.
- Work at a hotel desk or office monitor: the Air has an explicit Apple specification for up to two external displays; verify the exact iPad model and software behavior before planning the same arrangement around an iPad.
Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use for MacBook Air M5, with the conditions stated separately in its specifications. Apple also cautions that iPad battery life varies by use and configuration. Those figures are useful reference points, but they are not results from a shared test, so treat your own workload and access to charging as part of the travel decision.

Do not use the M5 performance claims as a head-to-head verdict
Apple’s performance figures are workload-specific company claims, not independent comparisons between these two products. For iPad Pro M5, Apple claims up to 3.5× AI performance versus iPad Pro with M4 and up to 5.6× versus iPad Pro with M1. For MacBook Air M5, Apple claims up to 4× AI task performance versus MacBook Air with M4 and up to 9.5× versus MacBook Air with M1. These comparisons use different product families and do not show that one M5 device is faster than the other for your work.
For the same reason, Apple’s statements about graphics and AI performance should not replace checking the software you need, its operating-system version, and the specific tasks you expect to perform. The shared M5 name does not make iPadOS and macOS workflows interchangeable.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the operating system can handle your work. Check your required apps, file workflow, and any work peripherals for iPadOS 26 or macOS Tahoe, as appropriate.
- Choose the screen size for how you work. iPad Pro comes in 11-inch and 13-inch models; MacBook Air comes in 13-inch and 15-inch versions, with Apple listing display sizes of 13.6 and 15.3 inches.
- Decide whether you need an iPad keyboard or Pencil. Add the compatible Magic Keyboard if you need laptop-style typing and trackpad control; add Apple Pencil only if drawing, handwriting, or annotation is part of your work.
- Check your monitor setup. The Air supports up to two external displays through Thunderbolt 4. For iPad, confirm support for the exact model and current software with the display arrangement you plan to use.
- Price the complete setup in your region. Compare the current device configuration and only the accessories you actually need. Apple’s announcements cover different markets, so verify local prices, stock, and cellular availability rather than transferring a price from another country.
Recommendation by work style
- Pick MacBook Air M5 if you need a conventional laptop, macOS, an integrated keyboard and trackpad, or a specified multi-display desk setup.
- Pick iPad Pro M5 if touch and Pencil input or tablet use are the main reasons for your purchase, and your essential apps work on iPadOS.
- Consider the iPad with Magic Keyboard if you need both a tablet and substantial typing, but account for the additional accessory and remember that the system remains iPadOS.
Apple announced the iPad Pro M5 on October 15, 2025, describing it as “our most advanced and versatile iPad experience yet,” in the words of senior vice president of Hardware Engineering John Ternus. Apple announced the MacBook Air M5 on March 3, 2026; Ternus called it a laptop bringing “incredible performance and even more capability.” These are Apple’s product descriptions, not independent comparative findings.
