Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most people, the iPad Air with M4 is the better buy: it is powerful enough for school, everyday productivity, and many creative tasks, while costing less. Choose the iPad Pro with M5 if its tandem OLED display and ProMotion matter to you, or if demanding graphics, video, or AI work makes its extra performance headroom valuable.
This comparison covers the iPad Pro with M5, announced October 15, 2025, and the iPad Air with M4, announced March 2, 2026. Both come in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. The recommendation is based on Apple’s published specifications, not independent hands-on testing. Apple’s comparison page lists these generations; check the model name when shopping, since older Air and Pro models may still be sold.
What is the main difference between iPad Pro M5 and iPad Air M4?
The Pro’s strongest case is its display: a tandem OLED panel with ProMotion, which the Air does not offer. The Air’s case is value. Both are capable tablets, but the Pro is better suited to people who will notice or use its screen and performance advantages.

Is the iPad Pro display worth choosing?
Consider the Pro if display quality is central to your work or entertainment. Apple specifies that its Ultra Retina XDR display delivers 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR, with peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits. The tandem OLED panel and ProMotion are the distinguishing features; the Air does not include them.
- Good reasons to choose Pro: you edit visual work, watch HDR content often, or specifically want OLED and ProMotion.
- Good reason to choose Air: the display is not a priority worth paying more for, and you would rather put the budget toward storage or another part of your setup.
How much performance do you need?
The Air M4 has an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU, 12GB of unified memory, and 120GB/s memory bandwidth. Apple says it is up to 30 percent faster than the iPad Air with M3 and up to 2.3 times faster than the iPad Air with M1. Those are Apple’s comparisons against named earlier Air models, not a direct benchmark of the M4 Air against the M5 Pro.

The Pro M5 has a GPU with Neural Accelerators, up to a 10-core CPU, more than 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, and faster storage. Apple claims up to 3.5 times the AI performance of the iPad Pro with M4 for its specified workloads. This is a vendor claim about a previous-generation Pro, not a general measure of how much faster the M5 Pro is than the M4 Air in every task.
- For browsing, notes, video calls, school, and ordinary productivity: the Air’s specifications should be ample for most users.
- For demanding graphics, video, or AI workflows: the Pro’s higher-end specifications and faster storage offer more headroom. This is a recommendation inferred from Apple’s specifications, not an independent benchmark result.
Which size and configuration should you buy?
Both generations offer 11-inch and 13-inch options. The smaller class is easier to carry; the larger gives you more working area. Choose based on where you will use the iPad and how much space your work needs, rather than assuming one size is universally better.
