In an AI-driven environment, it is increasingly important as the governed layer between enterprise systems, APIs, models and agent workflows—but it remains operational infrastructure, not a guarantee that AI-generated integrations or agent actions are safe or correct.
What iPaaS does—and why it is more than a connector catalogue
Gartner describes three core integration patterns for iPaaS:
- Data synchronization: keeping information consistent across systems.
- Process orchestration: coordinating work that spans multiple applications or steps.
- Composite services: combining capabilities and exposing them through APIs or events.
These patterns make iPaaS part of the production operating environment. A visual flow builder may help teams create integrations, but a usable platform also needs a managed runtime and control plane, role-based access, lifecycle tooling and production monitoring. Gartner’s public category description also identifies testing, versioning, deployment, alerting, reporting and auditing as relevant capabilities.
What changes when AI enters the architecture?
More systems and APIs may need to be connected
Gartner’s 2026 iPaaS abstract says AI is changing market expectations and driving demand for capabilities that support integration requirements from AI initiatives. In practice, an AI project may need governed access to business data, APIs, model services or application actions. That makes connectivity and controls across those boundaries a design concern, not just a way to speed up flow creation.

| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Integration pattern | Do you need data synchronization, multistep process orchestration, composite API services, event-driven integration, or a combination? |
| Environment and connectivity | Does the platform support the applications, data stores, APIs and event systems you use? Do you need cloud-only, hybrid or on-premises runtime capabilities? |
| Access and governance | Can you apply role-based access and audit activity? Can you define security boundaries for both human users and AI or agent access? |
| Lifecycle and operations | How are integrations tested, versioned and deployed? What monitoring, alerting and incident visibility are available in production? |
| AI fit | Is AI intended to help design flows, invoke models, expose tools to agents or govern agent interactions? What validation and human review remain necessary? |
Ask vendors to demonstrate the specific workflow you need, including how it is tested, promoted to production, monitored and audited. For agent-facing use cases, include the full path from identity and credential scope to the action an agent can take—not only the ease of connecting a protocol or API.

- Gartner forecast that more than 30% of the increase in API demand would come from AI and tools using LLMs by 2026. The materials available here do not verify whether that forecast was met.
- Gartner forecast that more than 80% of independent software vendors would have embedded GenAI by 2026, up from less than 5% at the time of the forecast. This is likewise not a measured 2026 result.
- Gartner reported that 83% of 459 surveyed technology service providers had deployed or were piloting GenAI. The survey was conducted from October through December 2023; it describes those respondents at that time, not all providers or current adoption.
Separately, Gartner’s worldwide iPaaS market-share abstract, published in May 2026, says adoption accelerated as enterprises expanded AI, low-code/no-code and SaaS initiatives. The accessible abstract supplies no market-size figure. These statements support a direction of change, but they do not prove a particular platform’s growth, feature quality or business outcome.
What controls should be in place for AI and agent workflows?
Gartner’s GenAI guidance for product and service providers recommends documenting use cases and user value, choosing an integration approach with cost effects in mind, and addressing inaccurate results, privacy, secure conversations and intellectual-property infringement with risk-specific safeguards. For an iPaaS implementation, translate those concerns into concrete checks:
- Identify what data is sent to a model, where it goes and whether that data is appropriate for the use case.
- Scope credentials to the minimum access required; determine what APIs and actions an agent can invoke.
- Decide which actions require a human approval, especially where an error could change important records or trigger consequential processes.
- Test generated mappings and flows with representative cases before deployment, including failure and unexpected-input cases.
- Monitor production changes and activity, and retain audit information needed to investigate errors or unauthorized actions.
These are implementation checks derived from the stated risks and iPaaS operating requirements; they are not a claim that every platform provides the same controls or that a particular control is mandated by Gartner.
Questions to ask before choosing—or rebuilding—an integration setup
Gartner’s category-page prompts include, “If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?” and “What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?” Make those questions specific to your environment:
- Which of our integrations are essential production processes, and which are simple data transfers?
- Where do failures become visible, and who is responsible for resolving them?
- Are access, testing, versioning, deployment and auditing handled consistently?
- For each proposed AI workflow, what data and actions are in scope, and where must a person review or approve the result?
- Which required applications, deployment environments and operational controls are not yet covered?
Answers help distinguish a missing connector from a deeper issue in governance, deployment or operations—and give vendors a concrete scenario to demonstrate rather than a generic feature list.
