Both ratings have the same first digit, 6, so they indicate the same level of dust protection. The difference is the water rating: IP67 covers temporary immersion, while IP68 covers continuous immersion under product-specific conditions more severe than those for IP67. Check the manufacturer’s stated limits—IP68 alone does not specify a universal depth or duration.
What the two digits in an IP rating mean
IEC 60529, titled Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code), classifies protection provided by an enclosure. Its official catalog lists a consolidated edition comprising the 1989 standard and amendments from 1999 and 2013: IEC 60529.
The digits describe separate characteristics, not an overall quality score. The first digit concerns protection from solid objects and dust; the second concerns protection from harmful water ingress. A European Commission Joint Research Centre report summarizing IEC 60529 describes these distinctions and the immersion categories: JRC136588 report on environmental criteria and ingress protection.

What IP68 does—and does not—tell you
IP68 does not, by itself, specify how deep or how long a particular device can be immersed. Those conditions depend on the product, so consult the manufacturer’s documentation before relying on the rating.

A product-specific example
Apple lists iPhone 16 as IP68 under IEC 60529, with a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes after testing under controlled laboratory conditions. That is the stated limit for this model, not a general definition of IP68: Apple iPhone 16 technical specifications.
Is IP68 better than IP67?
For the water category, IP68 is the higher rating because it covers continuous immersion under more severe conditions than numeral 7. But it is not a promise that every IP68 device can withstand the same depth, time, or water event. For dust, the comparison is even: both ratings share the digit 6.

Is an IP68 phone waterproof?
Do not treat an IP rating as a guarantee of permanent or unrestricted water resistance. For example, Apple says iPhone splash, water, and dust resistance may decrease with normal wear and advises against intentionally immersing an iPhone. Apple also says liquid damage is not covered by its warranty, while noting that consumer-law rights may apply. These are Apple-specific statements, so check the guidance and warranty terms for your device and location: Apple guidance on iPhone splash, water, and dust resistance.

- Find the exact product model and its official specifications or support guidance.
- Look for the full IP rating and any stated maximum depth and duration; do not assume another device with the same IP68 code has the same limits.
- Read the manufacturer’s notes about testing conditions, wear, use, and warranty coverage before exposing the device to water.
If you need to carry a phone near water, a waterproof pouch may be an extra precaution. Check the pouch’s own stated limits; using one does not change or upgrade the phone’s IP certification.
