Apple lists compatibility, an internet connection, enough available storage, and a completed installation as requirements for updating. A preparation screen alone does not establish how long the update should take: download time varies with update size and internet speed.
1. Keep your iPhone on Wi-Fi and connected to power
Leave the iPhone connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network and plug it into a power source while the update downloads and prepares. Avoid starting other large downloads on the same network during the retry. Apple says update download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed, so there is no guaranteed preparation time.
2. Confirm the iPhone supports iOS 27
Check Apple’s current iPhone model compatibility list for iOS 27. If your model is not supported, it cannot install that release; repeated download attempts will not make the update available.
3. Check storage and make room if needed
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple requires enough available storage to download an update and notes that an iPhone may temporarily remove app data that can be downloaded again.

- Enable Offload Unused Apps to remove apps you rarely use while retaining their documents and data.
- Delete apps or other unneeded content if more space is needed.
Return to Software Update and retry once space is available. Apple does not specify a universal gigabyte threshold for this update.
4. Check the network and try another Wi-Fi connection
If an alert says the iPhone cannot check for or download the update, retry on your current Wi-Fi network. If it fails again, connect to a different Wi-Fi network and try once more. Apple identifies inability to reach its update server as a possible cause; switching networks can help distinguish a network-access problem from a problem with the downloaded update.

5. Delete the downloaded update and download it again
If the update package appears in iPhone Storage and preparation remains stalled, remove that package and start a fresh download:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find and tap the listed iOS update.
- Tap Delete Update.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
This deletes the downloaded update package, not your personal photos or messages. If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage or the fresh download also fails, continue to a computer-based update.

6. Update using a Mac or iTunes
When wireless updating still fails, Apple recommends updating with a Mac or iTunes. This is also the next option if the update is missing from iPhone Storage or the problem persists across Wi-Fi networks. Follow Apple’s instructions for updating your iPhone with a computer, and choose Update if offered rather than a restore option; a restore can erase data.
7. Escalate to iOS Recovery only if the iPhone is not progressing
Use Apple’s iOS Recovery guidance if a computer does not recognize the iPhone, or if the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar. Recovery is an escalation for a device that is not completing an update, not the first response to a preparation screen that is still progressing.

Apple’s current iOS 27 recovery documentation includes Recovery Assistant, Software Update, and Diagnostics Mode. Follow the option indicated for your situation. Preserve a backup whenever possible before choosing any restore action, because restoring can erase the iPhone. If the computer update and Apple’s recovery instructions do not resolve the issue, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Why an iPhone can remain on “Preparing Update”
Apple says an iPhone needs a compatible device, an internet connection, and enough available storage to update. An inaccessible update server or an update that did not complete can also prevent installation. Check those prerequisites before treating the screen as evidence of a hardware fault.
