IonQ and Rigetti build quantum computers using different kinds of qubits: IonQ traps individual charged atoms, while Rigetti uses superconducting circuits. That difference affects how each system is controlled and scaled, but it does not establish a universal winner. To compare them fairly, look at the specific processor, workload, benchmark method, date, and access conditions—not just the qubit count or a single fidelity figure.
How IonQ and Rigetti build quantum computers
IonQ: trapped ions
IonQ’s systems use individual ions held in three-dimensional traps and controlled with optical techniques; the company’s roadmap also describes microwave operations in later generations. The roadmap lists all-to-all connectivity, meaning any qubit can be operated with any other without the same kind of fixed nearest-neighbor layout used in many chip-based designs. IonQ describes a modular approach to connecting systems as they grow. These are company descriptions and roadmap statements, not proof that every circuit avoids routing or incurs no overhead. IonQ’s roadmap
Rigetti: superconducting qubits
Rigetti builds superconducting quantum processors. Its Cepheus-1-108Q system contains 108 physical qubits arranged as twelve interconnected chiplets, each with nine qubits. This chiplet structure is part of Rigetti’s scaling approach; the system’s qubit count alone does not describe how well a particular algorithm will run. Rigetti’s April 7, 2026 announcement
What the published performance figures say—and do not say
Rigetti reported the following figures for Cepheus-1-108Q when it announced general availability on April 7, 2026. They are vendor-reported system metrics:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| System and source | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Rigetti Cepheus-1-108Q, Rigetti, April 7, 2026 | 99.1% median two-qubit gate fidelity | A median reported for this specific system, not a head-to-head result against an IonQ processor. |
| Rigetti Cepheus-1-108Q, Rigetti, April 7, 2026 | Approximately 60 ns gate speed | A vendor-reported gate-speed figure; gate time alone does not capture total circuit runtime or application performance. |
| Rigetti Cepheus-1-108Q, Rigetti, April 7, 2026 | 99.9% median single-qubit gate fidelity | A median single-qubit metric, distinct from two-qubit gate fidelity. |
| IonQ, company announcement in 2026 | 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, reported as achieved in 2025 | A company-reported result for IonQ; the cited announcement does not establish a matched comparison with Cepheus-1-108Q. |
The figures are not a controlled comparison: they concern different systems, disclosures, and potentially different definitions or procedures. Fidelity estimates the likelihood that a gate operation is performed as intended under a given measurement approach; it does not by itself predict whether a longer circuit will finish accurately. Circuit depth, connectivity, compilation, error correction, and the particular task also matter.
IonQ’s live roadmap lists targets including 100–256+ physical qubits and 12 logical qubits for 2026, followed by larger milestones. Those are company roadmap targets, not a statement that each milestone has been delivered. Rigetti’s second-quarter 2026 update describes targets over roughly three years of approximately 1,000 qubits, approximately 99.9% two-qubit gate fidelity, and gate speeds below 50 ns. These are prospective company targets, not current Cepheus-1-108Q specifications. Rigetti’s second-quarter 2026 update

Why qubit count and connectivity are not enough
A larger physical-qubit count does not automatically mean a computer can solve more useful problems. The usable capability of a processor also depends on error rates, how qubits connect, how operations are compiled onto the hardware, and whether errors can be corrected during computation. “All-to-all” describes a connectivity property; it does not guarantee that every workload is faster or more accurate than on a chiplet-based device.
A 2023 preprint by Chen and colleagues benchmarked IonQ Forte, reporting 30 trapped-ion qubits, all-to-all operations, and success through benchmark suite level #AQ 29. The authors also reported quantitative discrepancies between model predictions and experiment, along with errors outside the model. This is a dated research result for Forte—not a current product comparison with Rigetti’s Cepheus system—and it illustrates why component metrics or simulations should not be treated as a substitute for workload-level testing. Are trapped-ion or superconducting systems better?
Neither modality is inherently better for every task. A fair answer depends on what the program needs: the operations it uses, circuit depth, connectivity, accuracy requirements, available error mitigation or correction, and the performance of the specific processor at the time of testing. The sources cited here do not establish a matched, independent benchmark that runs the same workload on current IonQ and Rigetti systems using the same protocol. They therefore do not support naming an overall performance winner.
For a practical evaluation, compare systems using the same algorithm and workload, disclose the exact device and software/compiler settings, and report the benchmark protocol, date, access conditions, and results. Include end-to-end measures such as completed circuit quality or time to a useful answer, rather than relying only on qubit count, gate speed, or fidelity.

Can you use IonQ or Rigetti through the cloud?
Both companies describe cloud access, but device availability, regions, queues, supported software, and terms can change. IonQ says its quantum services are available through major cloud providers; the cited company announcement does not enumerate current provider, device, and region combinations. Check the provider catalog for the particular IonQ system you intend to use. IonQ’s April 22, 2026 announcement
Rigetti’s April 2026 release named QCS and Amazon Braket for Cepheus-1-108Q access. Its first-quarter 2026 report also named Microsoft Azure Quantum and qBraid among access routes and described on-premises systems. These listings do not guarantee that a particular processor is available in every service or region; verify the current catalog and access terms before planning a run. What their roadmaps mean for fault tolerance
IonQ’s April 2026 technical report outlines a full-stack fault-tolerance blueprint, while its roadmap lists future physical- and logical-qubit milestones. Rigetti’s longer-term figures are also targets. Roadmaps help explain each company’s planned direction, but they are not delivered capabilities. The cited sources do not establish that either company has delivered general-purpose fault-tolerant quantum computing.
