IO River is a software layer designed to manage traffic, security, and edge computing across multiple CDN and edge providers. It does not replace those providers with a CDN network of its own; rather, it aims to make their infrastructure easier to coordinate from one control layer. That can reduce dependence on a single vendor, but it does not automatically make applications or security policies portable—or eliminate the work and cost of running multiple providers.

What is IO River?

IO River is a Boston-based startup founded in 2022, according to Network World’s 2026 report. Its Virtual Edge platform is intended to sit above existing content delivery networks (CDNs) and edge platforms, providing a shared way to manage them. The company’s current site describes offerings including VCDN, vEdge, Multi-CDN as a Service, and Multi-Edge as a Service; product names and packaging may change.

IO River does not own a CDN network. Network World describes it as an overlay that can work with infrastructure from providers such as Akamai, Cloudflare, Fastly, and AWS. The platform’s proposed role is to coordinate traffic steering, configuration, monitoring, security services, and edge-code deployment across those providers.

Network World reported that IO River processes more than 200 petabytes monthly. The company’s site says it integrates with more than 15 CDN and edge providers; that is a company-published figure, not an independent assessment of the integrations’ scope or performance.

How does IO River’s multi-CDN layer work?

Traffic steering and shared operations

Rather than send every request to a single CDN by default, a multi-CDN setup can distribute or redirect traffic among providers. IO River says its platform can steer traffic according to performance and cost, and route around outages, congestion, and traffic spikes. Its 2024 launch post describes a unified management layer with a UI, API, and Terraform support. Those are company descriptions; the reviewed sources do not provide an independent benchmark of failover speed or routing outcomes.

IO River’s current product pages also describe centralized management for policies and security functions, including web application firewall (WAF), rate limiting, bot protection, and load balancing. A shared control interface may simplify administration, but it does not by itself prove that every provider implements a policy identically.

Edge code and provider runtimes

Network World reports that IO River uses JavaScript and WebAssembly as part of an approach for distributing edge microservices across provider runtimes. CEO and co-founder Edward Tsinovoi told the publication that customers can write code once and have it distributed to different platforms. The company’s current product descriptions emphasize unified orchestration and deployment, but the reviewed official pages do not independently demonstrate that code will run unchanged across every supported runtime.

This distinction matters: providers expose different APIs, execution environments, and feature sets. A virtualization layer can help abstract those differences, but portability should be verified for the specific functions, languages, and runtime features an application uses. Network World also describes IO River as fitting in front of origin Kubernetes clusters in regional data centers.

Can IO River reduce CDN vendor lock-in?

It can address some sources of lock-in by giving teams a common way to operate multiple providers and, where supported, deploy edge functions across them. A business that can shift traffic or workloads between providers may be less reliant on one provider’s network and service stack.

That is not the same as removing lock-in. Applications may still depend on provider-specific APIs or edge features; security rules may behave differently; and existing contracts, egress fees, migration work, and operational skills all affect how practical a switch is. Multi-provider operation can also add complexity if teams must troubleshoot multiple dashboards, runtimes, and policy systems.

Security consistency deserves particular attention. Tsinovoi told Network World that WAF engines can differ between providers, so traffic accepted by one may be blocked by another. A centralized policy layer may help manage controls, but teams should test actual behavior across providers rather than assume identical results.

Source and date Published figure or claim How to interpret it
IO River launch post, 2024 99.999% availability; up to 40% cost reduction; up to 50% performance improvement Company claims; the reviewed sources do not provide independent audits or measurement methodology.
IO River homepage, accessed 2026; publication date not stated 20 ms average P95 performance; 32.2% average cost reduction; 200+ hours saved monthly Company-published metrics; the reviewed page does not state the methodology or customer population.
Network World, 2026 More than 200 petabytes processed monthly Reported by the trade publication; it is not a measurement of uptime, savings, or performance improvement.

IO River’s 2024 launch post also presents the platform as operating without an extra tier through which all traffic must pass. Its current product page advertises “zero added latency.” These are company architecture and product claims, not independently verified measurements in the reviewed sources. Redundant providers can improve resilience, but their presence alone does not establish uninterrupted service or five-nines availability.

What should an enterprise evaluate?

Before adopting IO River—or building multi-CDN operations directly—evaluate the workload and provider mix rather than relying on a headline savings or availability figure.

  • Coverage and geography: Confirm which CDN and edge integrations are available for your account and regions, and measure which providers perform best where your users are.
  • Code portability: Identify the edge functions, languages, APIs, and runtime features in use. Test what transfers unchanged and what needs adaptation.
  • Security behavior: Compare WAF, bot, rate-limit, and access-control outcomes across providers. Test conflicts and document how policy changes are rolled back.
  • Traffic control: Understand whether steering and failover respond to availability, performance, cost, contractual commitments, or some combination—and how quickly changes take effect.
  • Observability and recovery: Check what telemetry is exposed, how incidents are diagnosed, and how to revert a configuration or routing change.
  • Total cost and migration: Include platform subscription and traffic charges, current provider commitments, migration effort, staffing, and provider-specific egress or feature costs. The reviewed sources do not establish an independent total-cost comparison.

Network World reported that IO River raised a $20 million Series A and had $25.4 million in total funding, including seed funding. That provides company context, not evidence of product performance or a guarantee of long-term availability.
