The “designer’s dream CNC router” headline refers to Inventables’ Carvey, a compact enclosed desktop CNC machine featured by Make on October 21, 2014. Make’s article described its small work area, enclosure, material clamps and Easel software as ways to bring CNC routing to studio desktops. Its Kickstarter price and specifications are historical launch-era claims, not current buying information; the present-day Inventables X-Carve Pro is a separate machine.
What was the Inventables Carvey?
Carvey was presented as a microwave-sized CNC router intended to make digital carving approachable in a studio or workshop. In its 2014 first look, Make described an enclosed machine with an 8-by-12-inch bed and a stated work area of 12 by 8 by 2.75 inches. The enclosure was intended to contain dust and reduce noise, while the footprint and guided software were part of the appeal for designers who did not have room or experience for a larger shop router.
Make reported a 300-watt DC spindle, solid aluminum frame plates, industrial linear bearings and .001-inch tolerances. These are specifications and performance claims reported in the 2014 article, not results of independent testing presented here. The launch story also described an integrated wasteboard, threaded inserts and material clamps for holding stock.

Materials and workholding
Make listed hard and soft wood, carbon fiber, plywood, plastics, cork, circuit boards, linoleum and soft metals such as aluminum, gold and silver as materials Carvey could carve. Material suitability depends on the stock, cutter, feeds and speeds, and setup; the list is what the 2014 article reported, not a guarantee that every material or job is suitable.
#1 Best Overall
- [Upgraded Y-axis 3060 Table] Comes with a longer table base, the bed size is 300*600mm, and the effective processing area is also 300*600*73mm, which provides the possibility for projects that require large and multiple pieces of processing.
- [800w Trim Router & Upgradeable 1.5kw Spindle ] Comes with 800W trim router & Er11-1/8" collet with 6-speed settings (8000-24000 RPM). Can easily cut metals such as aluminum, copper, etc. Software-controlled run/stop functionality, with speed adjustment requiring manual dial control. Comes with ⌀65mm spindle mount, it can be directly upgraded to our 1.5kw spindle kit for greater cutting capacity, precision and improved efficiency
- [Dual Linear Guides & Upgradeable Ball Screws] Each axis (X, Y, Z) is equipped with MGN-15 dual linear guides and T8 lead screws. It has high precision, high rigidity and high load for metal cutting, and improved dust protection for X and Y axes. 1204 ball screw kit available for upgrade.
- [Nema 17 stepper & Upgradable Closed-loop Motor] The 3060-Evo Max employs a higher-torque 650mN·m stepper motor compared to the common Nema17 motor (420mN·m), significantly enhancing its capability to process metallic materials. Upgradeable Nema17 closed-loop motor to obtain greater torque and achieve no step loss.
- [Grbl_ESP32 Firmware (GRBL 1.3a)] Optimized 32-bit control board, runs on the latest GRBL 1.3a firmware instead of the other GRBL1.1f, , supporting advanced features such as laser engraving, 4th rotation axis, M07/M08 coolant system control, closed-loop stepper motor, and 3-pin touch probe.
The reported clamps and threaded inserts were intended to secure stock to the integrated wasteboard. For any CNC router, workholding matters: stock must remain fixed while the cutter moves, and the tooling must suit both the material and the operation. Bits and clamps are relevant accessory categories, but compatibility with a historical Carvey should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Software and file workflow
The article described Inventables’ Easel as browser-based CNC software, with material presets and color-coded bits aimed at reducing setup complexity. It also said Carvey could run G-code, the machine instructions used to direct a CNC toolpath. Inventables Hardware Support’s “How does X-Carve work?” article, updated January 23, 2025, calls a G-code file the official name for that data file; that current support explanation is about X-Carve, not evidence of Carvey’s present software support.

- THREE FLUTE: Three-flute design provides a smooth finish on cutting boards, spoilboards, and wood slabs.
- TOOL DESIGN: Carbide tipped for long life as an economical surfacing option compared to many surfacing bits. The 1" diameter allows it to be easily used on small sleds or CNCs.
- MATERIALS: Perfect for use on natural woods, composite woods, hard plastics, and epoxy, providing clean and precise cuts across a variety of surfaces.
What did Carvey cost at launch?
Make reported a Kickstarter early-backer pledge of $1,999, rising to $2,399 after the first 100 pledges were claimed. Those were 2014 launch-era pledge amounts. They are not current retail prices, and the sources available do not establish whether Carvey can still be purchased.

These product and support details can change, so check the manufacturer’s current information when evaluating a purchase.
What should a CNC buyer compare?
Carvey’s 2014 pitch centered on compactness, an enclosure and software that made it easier to move from a design to a carved object. Those features alone do not determine whether a router fits a particular workshop. Compare the details that affect the actual jobs and setup:

- Spindle and motion system: Compare stated specifications carefully, and distinguish manufacturer claims from independent accuracy testing.
- Dust, noise and safety: Look for the actual dust-management approach and safety provisions, rather than assuming an enclosure eliminates dust or sound.
- Software and file compatibility: Confirm the design workflow, supported file types, and whether internet access is required for the tasks you need.
- Footprint and installation: Account for bench dimensions, machine weight, room to load material and access to dust collection.
- Accessories and total setup: Include suitable bits, clamps, dust collection and any required computer or workbench in the practical cost.
- Availability and support: Confirm the exact model is offered and that its documentation, software and service apply to that model.
Inventables’ support article about the discontinued original belt-driven X-Carve kit concerns that kit, not Carvey. It does not establish Carvey’s current availability. The Inventables “What is X-Carve?” support page and the company’s October 6, 2020 X-Carve Pro launch announcement provide background on the separate current product line.

“Designer’s dream CNC router” was the framing of a 2014 first-look headline, not an objective product category or a current endorsement. The article captured a specific proposition: CNC routing on studio desktops through an enclosed, compact machine paired with Easel and a straightforward material-holding setup. Its Kickstarter pledges, specifications and capability claims belong to that launch-era coverage. They should not be used as present-day purchase terms or treated as independently verified performance figures.
