Intel’s March 2022 12th Gen Core vPro announcement described a set of hardware-assisted security capabilities—not a guarantee that every 12th Gen Core PC includes or enables them. The headline changes were an upgraded Intel Threat Detection Technology (TDT), desktop support for Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET), and hardware support for memory encryption and virtualization protections. Their availability depends on the complete PC configuration, platform tier, operating system, firmware, and compatible security software.
What security enhancements did Intel announce for 12th Gen Core vPro processors?
Intel presented vPro security as a stack spanning hardware, firmware, operating systems, and applications. Alongside TDT, CET, TME-MK, and VT-rp, the company described dynamic root of trust, OS security reporting, and expanded policies for system management mode protections. Intel said the platform continued to meet or exceed Microsoft Secured-core PC requirements depending on the device. These are Intel’s launch-era descriptions and claims, not independent efficacy test results.
At a glance
| Capability | What Intel said it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Threat Detection Technology (TDT) | Uses processor telemetry and machine learning to help compatible security software identify anomalous application behavior. | Requires compatible security software; integration varies by product and version. |
| Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET) | Provides hardware-enhanced protection against certain memory-safety attacks, including malicious code insertion. | Intel said 12th Gen vPro brought CET to desktop processors for the first time; it had been available on mobile beginning with 11th Gen Core. |
| Total Memory Encryption – Multi-Key (TME-MK) | Encrypts DRAM, with keys intended for physical-attack protection and OS-directed memory encryption. | Intel’s 2022 brief said enablement was pending an expected future OS release for some capabilities. |
| Virtualization Technology with Redirect Protection (VT-rp) | Provides hardware-enhanced protection for OS virtualization. | The 2022 brief likewise marked enablement as pending an expected future OS release; current support must be checked for the specific PC and OS. |
What is Intel Threat Detection Technology?
Intel describes TDT as a hardware assist used by security applications such as antivirus and endpoint detection and response (EDR) software. For the 12th Gen launch, Intel said it upgraded TDT with an anomalous-behavior detector: AI profiles normal application behavior and signals deviations to endpoint security software in real time. Intel’s technical description refers to machine-learning algorithms and processor telemetry, including Intel Processor Trace, Last Branch Record, and Performance Monitoring Unit data, to profile benign control-flow behavior.
The aim is to help security software identify suspicious activity, including behavior associated with “living off the land” and supply-chain-style attacks. This describes Intel’s stated capability; the announcement does not establish detection rates or prove that an attack will be caught. Intel named CrowdStrike, ESET, and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint in connection with TDT integrations. That does not mean every security product, edition, or version consumes every TDT function.

What do Intel CET, TME-MK, and VT-rp do?
Control-flow Enforcement Technology
CET is hardware-enhanced protection designed to help defend applications against certain memory-safety attacks, such as malicious code insertion into software executing in PC memory. Intel said CET had been available on mobile processors beginning with 11th Gen Core and that 12th Gen vPro brought it to desktop processors for the first time.
Total Memory Encryption – Multi-Key
TME-MK encrypts DRAM. Intel’s brief describes key 0 as helping protect against physical cold-boot attacks, while keys 1–15 can encrypt OS-directed sections of DRAM. For vPro Enterprise for Chrome, Intel also described TME-MK as helping protect against physical device attacks. These descriptions are platform-specific, not a claim that every 12th Gen computer or Chromebook has the same implementation.

Virtualization Technology with Redirect Protection
VT-rp is Intel’s hardware-enhanced protection for OS virtualization. The Intel 2022 platform brief said enablement for VT-rp and TME-MK was pending an expected future OS release for some capabilities. That historical note does not establish the present enablement state on every system; check the current OS and OEM documentation for the exact device.
Key Locker on Chrome systems
Intel identified Key Locker as a feature of vPro Enterprise for Chrome only, intended to help protect encryption keys used by AES-NI. Do not infer its presence from a 12th Gen processor name alone.

Does every 12th Gen Intel Core processor support vPro?
No. Intel vPro is a platform qualification, not a synonym for any 12th Gen Core CPU. Intel says a vPro system requires an eligible processor, supported operating system, Intel LAN and/or WLAN silicon, firmware enhancements, and other hardware and software. The OEM’s implementation and the selected vPro tier also matter.
Intel’s 2022 materials list the Core i7-1260P among mobile processors eligible for vPro Essentials. That eligibility does not prove that a particular laptop built with an i7-1260P includes or enables every vPro feature. Verify the precise OEM model and configuration. Intel’s lists also included mobile i7-1250U, i7-1255U, i5-1230U, i5-1235U, i5-1240P, i9-12900HK, i7-12700H, and i5-12500H, as well as desktop i9-12900, i7-12700, i5-12600, and i5-12500 models and T variants.

How vPro tier and device configuration affect features
Intel’s brief distinguishes Windows vPro Essentials, Windows vPro Enterprise, and vPro Enterprise for Chrome. Its feature table marks some capabilities as Enterprise-only and Key Locker as Chrome-only. A processor badge or product-family label is therefore not enough to establish the features a deployed PC can use.
- Confirm the exact OEM model and configuration, not only the processor model.
- Check the system’s vPro tier and supported operating system.
- Verify firmware and hardware enablement with the OEM, particularly for TME-MK and VT-rp.
- For TDT, confirm that the deployed security product and its version support the relevant integration.
Intel’s platform brief also describes its Stable IT Platform Program (SIPP) as aiming for zero hardware changes over a five-quarter deployment window. That is a program goal, not a promise that every system configuration or component will remain unchanged.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Intel’s March 2022 announcement and supporting product brief establish what Intel said the platform offered and how the features were intended to work. They do not provide independent comparative security testing, an efficacy statistic, or a current per-model matrix of OS enablement. Intel’s own brief cautions: “No product or component can be absolutely secure.” Treat the announced protections as layers to be verified and configured, not proof that a PC is secure simply because it carries a vPro label.
