For a new desktop build where keeping the motherboard for a future CPU upgrade matters most, AMD’s AM5 platform has the clearer published runway: AMD announced support through 2029. Intel’s LGA1700 platform covers desktop Core generations 12 through 14, but moving from it to Core Ultra Desktop Series 2 requires a new LGA1851 motherboard. Neither socket label alone guarantees that a specific processor will work in a specific board.

Which platform has the better upgrade path?

AM5 is the better-supported choice if your priority is a stated future CPU-support horizon and the possibility of reusing your motherboard. On May 31, 2026, AMD announced that it would support Socket AM5 through 2029. That is a platform commitment, not a guarantee that every AM5 motherboard will support every processor released during that period. Check the board maker’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements for the exact processor you plan to install.

Intel has a clearly documented upgrade path within LGA1700: Intel lists 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation desktop Core processors for compatible 600- and 700-series motherboards. But Intel’s Core Ultra Desktop Series 2 uses a different socket and chipset platform, so moving from an LGA1700 system to that processor family requires a new motherboard.

This comparison is about documented compatibility and upgrade flexibility—not CPU speed, gaming performance, platform price, or total ownership cost.

How the documented CPU paths compare

Upgrade question AMD AM5 Intel desktop platforms covered here
Published support horizon AMD announced support through 2029 on May 31, 2026. AMD’s announcement does not guarantee support for every CPU on every AM5 board. The cited Intel compatibility pages document specific sockets and generations; they do not establish an equivalent future socket-support commitment. LGA1700 compatibility; LGA1851/LGA1700 incompatibility.
Documented processor families AMD lists Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 processors for AM5 boards. Exact CPU support depends on the motherboard and its firmware. AMD AM5 chipset compatibility. Intel lists 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation desktop Core processors for LGA1700 boards with 600- or 700-series chipsets. Core Ultra Desktop Series 2 uses LGA1851 and 800-series chipsets.
Motherboard reuse A future AM5 CPU upgrade without replacing the motherboard is plausible within AMD’s announced support window, subject to the board maker’s support for that exact CPU. Moving from an LGA1700 system to Core Ultra Desktop Series 2 requires an LGA1851/800-series motherboard.
Memory reuse AM5 uses DDR5. AMD’s AM5 platform information. LGA1700 boards may use DDR4 or DDR5; the motherboard determines which memory type is supported. Intel’s LGA1700 compatibility information.
Cooler reuse AMD said existing AM4 cooling solutions continue to be supported on AM5, subject to the cooler model and implementation. AMD’s AM5 platform information. LGA1700 and LGA1851 mounting-hole spacing is mechanically compatible. Confirm that your particular cooler has sufficient thermal and power capability with its manufacturer. Intel’s socket incompatibility guidance.

What an AM5 upgrade commitment does—and does not—mean

AMD’s announcement gives buyers a dated platform-support horizon: AM5 support through 2029. AMD also lists Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 families for AM5 boards. Together, these facts make AM5 a compelling choice for someone who wants to plan for a later processor replacement while keeping the same motherboard.

However, compatibility is decided at the motherboard-model level. Board makers publish CPU support lists and may require a particular BIOS version. A matching socket is not enough to establish compatibility, and the AMD announcement does not say that every AM5 board will run every CPU supported by the platform.

What Intel’s LGA1700 path supports

LGA1700 is not limited to a single desktop Core generation. Intel’s compatibility guidance lists 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation desktop Core processors for motherboards based on 600- or 700-series chipsets. When changing generations, a BIOS, firmware, or CSME update may be required. Check the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and update instructions before buying a replacement processor.

The important boundary is the next documented platform transition. Intel says Core Ultra Desktop Series 2 processors use LGA1851 and 800-series motherboards, and are not compatible with LGA1700 or 600-/700-series boards. An LGA1700 owner considering that processor family should budget for a motherboard change; the socket transition is not avoided by a BIOS update.

Memory and cooler reuse are separate decisions

Memory

AM5 is a DDR5 platform. LGA1700 offers more board-dependent flexibility: some boards use DDR4, while others use DDR5. Memory compatibility follows the motherboard, so an existing kit should not be assumed reusable when changing platforms or boards.

Coolers

AMD says existing AM4 cooling solutions continue to be supported on AM5, subject to the specific cooler and implementation. Intel says LGA1700 and LGA1851 have compatible cooler mounting-hole spacing, but a cooler that physically mounts may still be inadequate for a particular processor’s thermal and power demands. Confirm both fit and cooling capability with the cooler maker.

How to verify a motherboard before upgrading

  1. Identify the exact motherboard model and revision. Use the model printed on the board or shown in your system information; do not rely only on the chipset or socket name.
  2. Open the board maker’s CPU support list. Find the exact processor model and confirm it is listed for your board revision.
  3. Check the required BIOS version and release notes. If the processor needs a newer BIOS, follow the manufacturer’s update procedure before removing the currently supported CPU. Confirm whether the board can update without a working processor if your upgrade plan depends on that feature.
  4. Check platform-level reuse separately. Verify memory type and cooler fit and capacity against the exact board, memory kit, processor, and cooler documentation.
  5. Price the whole transition, not just the CPU. A move to a different socket can require a motherboard—and potentially a different memory kit—so compare the actual components you would need to replace.

What the longevity comparison cannot tell you

AMD described Socket AM4 as reaching its 10-year anniversary in its May 31, 2026 announcement. That is historical context, not a promise that AM5 will last for ten years; the stated AM5 commitment is through 2029. Likewise, the Intel compatibility pages cited here establish the listed socket and processor boundaries, not a complete future Intel roadmap.

Upgrade-path evidence also cannot determine which platform is faster or better value for a particular workload. Those are separate comparisons requiring current processor, motherboard, and price information.
