Compare specific CPU models using the games and applications you actually run, then weigh their performance against the full cost of the system—not just the processor price. Benchmark results are useful only when their test conditions match your needs.
Start with the workload, not the brand
Intel and AMD each sell processors for different budgets and uses. A CPU that leads in one game or application may not lead in another, and a difference in a benchmark may matter less than the platform cost or an upgrade you already own. Decide what the computer needs to do, identify a realistic budget, and compare particular models on that basis.
Keep gaming and productivity separate. Game performance depends on the titles, graphics settings, resolution, graphics card, and memory configuration. Productivity includes very different tasks—from short office operations to lengthy rendering or compiling jobs—so a general “productivity” score cannot answer every buyer’s question.
How to compare gaming performance
Use the games and settings you care about
Look for results across several representative games, not one favorable title. A useful comparison holds the graphics card and memory conditions as close as possible, and identifies the resolution, graphics settings, BIOS, software versions, and features enabled. Check whether the test is CPU-limited: lower-resolution, high-frame-rate testing can reveal CPU differences more clearly, while a GPU-limited setup may produce a different practical result.

AMD says its desktop Ryzen gaming testing was conducted by AMD Performance Labs in December 2025. It compared Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 7 9850X3D systems using 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory and Windows 11 Pro with a similarly configured Core Ultra 9 285K system using 32 GB of DDR5-8000 memory; AMD lists the tested games on its desktop Ryzen page. This disclosure helps explain the scope of AMD’s claim, but it remains AMD’s test and the memory speeds differ.

Intel’s March 2026 Core Ultra 7 270K Plus gaming claim is based on a geometric mean of average FPS at 1080p/high across a specified game set, with Intel Binary Optimization Tool enabled where supported. Intel describes the conditions on its Core Ultra 200S Series page. Treat the result as Intel’s claim under those conditions, not as an independent cross-vendor verdict.
How to compare productivity performance
Match the test to the work
Choose application-specific results for the work you do: rendering, video encoding, code compilation, photo editing, office software, or another CPU-sensitive task. Distinguish short interactive work from long all-core workloads. Check software versions and whether the test uses hardware acceleration. Some creator workflows depend heavily on a discrete GPU or other accelerators, so CPU-only results may not predict total task time.

Do not use core count as a shortcut
Core and thread counts describe a processor, but do not establish which CPU is faster or better value in a particular program. AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9850X3D at 8 cores and 16 threads and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D at 16 cores and 32 threads; those specifications alone cannot determine which is the better choice for your application. The official product information cited here does not provide a complete, neutral productivity comparison across current Intel and AMD models.
Compare the whole build cost
Use current local prices and include the components required to run the CPU. A cheaper processor can lead to a more expensive build if the motherboard, memory, cooling, or replacement parts cost more. If you already own components, account for whether they are compatible before comparing upgrade costs.

- Check the current local CPU price rather than treating a launch price as today’s street price.
- Add the motherboard and memory you need, including replacement costs if your existing parts are incompatible.
- Include a suitable cooler and check case clearance.
- Check whether the motherboard needs a BIOS update for the exact processor.
- Compare the resulting system cost with measured performance in your intended workload.

AMD lists AM5, DDR5 memory, and supported chipset families for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Check the motherboard maker’s support list and BIOS requirements for the specific processor: Ryzen 7 9850X3D specifications and Ryzen 9 9950X3D specifications.
Cooling and processor power
AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9850X3D with a 120 W default TDP and says its thermal solution is not included; the product page recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. That is not a statement that liquid cooling is mandatory for every build. Choose a compatible cooler for your intended setup and verify case clearance. AMD’s specifications page gives the product details.
AMD lists the Ryzen 9 9950X3D at a 170 W default TDP. Intel’s processor thermal and power specifications provide power-limit context for Intel models. Actual power, temperature, and performance depend on the specific processor, BIOS settings, workload, and cooling; do not infer real-world behavior from one power figure alone.
