The Intel SSD 760p was a mainstream PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe drive launched in 2018. Its appeal was fast peak reads and competitive launch-era value, but a large copy could slow sharply after the drive’s write cache filled. That makes it a useful legacy-drive option only when its capacity, condition, price, and your system’s compatibility all check out.
What the Intel SSD 760p is
The 760p is an M.2 NVMe SSD that connects over PCIe Gen3 x4. Intel offered single-sided models up to 1TB and a double-sided 2TB version, for desktop and mobile PCs. An M.2 connector alone does not guarantee compatibility: the slot must support PCIe/NVMe, and the system must have room for the drive’s physical dimensions and sidedness. Check the computer or motherboard documentation before buying. Intel SSD 760p Series product brief
Intel’s 2018 product brief rates the drive at up to 3,230 MB/s sequential read and up to 1,625 MB/s sequential write, with up to 340K random-read IOPS and 275K random-write IOPS. These are manufacturer maximums, not a promise of everyday or sustained performance. Intel also advertised up to six times the performance of SATA SSDs; that is Intel’s marketing comparison, not a universal real-world result.
How it performed in reviews
Peak reads were the highlight
PCWorld found very strong synthetic read performance on its 512GB review sample. That supports the drive’s appeal for read-heavy use, but synthetic peak results do not describe every application or workload. Tom’s Hardware tested 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities and noted high latency among the drive’s drawbacks in its March 2, 2018 review update. Its capacity-value judgments reflected alternatives and prices at that time, not today’s market.

Large sustained writes could fall after cache
In PCWorld’s large-copy test of a 512GB sample, the cache ran out after roughly 6GB and write speed then fell to about 575 MB/s. This is a result from that sample and test, not a fixed speed for every capacity or workload. A large continuous transfer can expose the limitation; small everyday writes may not behave the same way.
HotHardware’s 2018 testing compared the 512GB model with other NVMe drives and described the 760p as Intel’s mainstream, lower-cost NVMe refresh. That is useful historical context, not evidence that it is cheaper than current alternatives.

Capacity, warranty, and endurance
Tom’s Hardware reported an endurance rating basis of 72TB written per 128GB of capacity. The higher-capacity figures below are proportional calculations from that basis, not separate endurance tests by the publication. Tom’s Hardware also said it had not tested the drive to full endurance.
| Capacity | Rated endurance |
|---|---|
| 128GB | 72TBW |
| 256GB | 144TBW (calculated proportionally from 72TB per 128GB) |
| 512GB | 288TBW (calculated proportionally from 72TB per 128GB) |
Intel’s 2018 product brief lists a five-year limited warranty. Confirm the terms that apply to a specific used or remaining-stock drive with the seller and Intel; the original warranty period does not establish that a particular unit is still covered.

Security and system fit
Intel’s SSD 760p Series product brief states: “The SSD 760p also supports AES 256-bit self-encryption to provide protection of critical data stored on the device.” This is Intel’s product claim, not an independent security evaluation. Confirm that your system and software can use the feature as intended.
Before purchasing, check the exact capacity and physical configuration against your system. In particular, confirm PCIe/NVMe support rather than relying on the presence of an M.2 slot, and check whether the drive’s sidedness and dimensions fit the available space. The 2TB model is double-sided, unlike the listed single-sided capacities through 1TB.

Is the Intel SSD 760p worth buying now?
The original value case was strong peak reads and an affordable entry into NVMe in the 2018 market. A 760p today is a legacy drive, and there is no established current price or availability here to support calling it a bargain. For an upgrade, compare the actual price of the exact capacity with current drives, and weigh read performance against the sustained-write behavior documented in the 512GB test. Buy only from a seller you trust, especially if the drive is used or old stock.
