Page 2 of the Intel Developer Forum 2010 keynote coverage turns to David “Dadi” Perlmutter, who followed Intel CEO Paul Otellini. The indexed account says Perlmutter discussed the growing volume of data and the challenge of making it accessible across many devices, then used a family anecdote to introduce the speculative idea of a computer interface connected to the brain.

Where Perlmutter’s keynote fit in IDF 2010

Intel held its 13th Intel Developer Forum at Moscone Center West in San Francisco from September 13 to 15, 2010. Paul Otellini gave the opening-day keynote, followed by Perlmutter’s deeper presentation on the broader “Computing Continuum” theme. Intel’s event information also listed Sandy Bridge among the forum’s technical-session topics. Intel’s event announcement confirms the dates, venue, speaker order and Sandy Bridge’s place in the program.

What Perlmutter discussed

More data, more devices

In the indexed excerpt of the Page 2 account, Perlmutter began with future computing challenges: increasing quantities of data and the need for many devices to access it seamlessly. The excerpt does not provide a complete transcript or enough detail to reconstruct the full presentation.

A speculative brain-interface idea

The account recalls Perlmutter telling a story about one of his daughters wishing she could “record her dreams.” He used the anecdote to raise the possibility of future PC interfaces connected to the brain. This is presented as speculation, not as a product announcement or a claim that such an interface existed.

What the Sandy Bridge and brain comparison means

The account compared about 1 billion transistors in Sandy Bridge with about 100 billion neurons in the human brain. Those figures are reported by the 2010 HotHardware coverage; they count different things and should not be read as equivalent measures of computing power, intelligence or performance. The excerpt supplies no benchmark or scientific comparison establishing such equivalence.

Keep Otellini’s keynote separate

Intel’s separate summary of Otellini’s opening keynote described a vision of connected devices and interoperability. It covered demonstrations involving Sony Internet TV and the Logitech Revue add-in box, using Intel Atom CE4100 and Google TV, and referred to the upcoming second-generation Intel Core processor family. Those details belong to Otellini’s segment and Intel’s event-day announcement, not to the available account of Perlmutter’s remarks. Intel’s September 13 keynote release provides that separate context.

Sources and scope

The Page 2 narrative and its transistor/neuron figures are available here through HotHardware’s indexed excerpt; the original page could not be retrieved directly. As a result, the summary above sticks to what that excerpt reports and does not treat it as a full transcript. Intel’s event materials corroborate the forum context, but do not independently confirm every anecdote or figure attributed to Perlmutter’s segment. Sandy Bridge and second-generation Intel Core are historical processor generations; this coverage does not establish a current model recommendation, compatibility, price or availability.
