Intel created a dedicated Internet of Things Group in 2013 to bring its embedded-market work under one organization. Led by Doug Davis, the group was meant to combine Intel processors with software, security and other company assets to build fuller platforms for markets such as industrial automation, retail, aerospace and automotive. It was a distinct organization from the broader group Intel announced in 2015.

What Intel created in 2013

On November 6, 2013, EE Times reported that Intel had created a new Internet of Things group and appointed Doug Davis as its general manager. The report said Davis would report to the executive office under new CEO Brian Krzanich.

The group focused on embedded markets, where computing is built into equipment and systems rather than used as a general-purpose personal computer. Its initial areas included:

  • Industrial automation
  • Retail
  • Aerospace
  • Automotive

Wind River, Intel’s embedded software business, was included. The aim was to bring together Intel’s Atom and Quark system-on-chip (SoC) products with Wind River software, McAfee security and other Intel assets in more complete software stacks and platforms. The strategy therefore extended beyond selling processors alone: it sought to give customers more of the components needed to build connected devices and systems.

How the group’s platform strategy developed

By December 2014, Intel was describing an IoT Platform as an end-to-end reference model intended to make connectivity and security more unified and straightforward. Intel said the platform combined hardware and software and was supported by relationships with systems integrators, with a roadmap stretching from edge devices to cloud services.

That approach fit the original group’s effort to assemble silicon, software and security into broader solutions. Announcing the platform, Davis, then Intel vice president and general manager of the Internet of Things Group, said: “With this platform we are continuing to expand our IoT product family beyond silicon with enhancements to our pre-integrated solutions that make IoT more accessible to solution providers.” The description and quote appeared in Intel’s December 9, 2014 announcement.

What Intel forecast for the group

Intel’s November 2014 investor presentation identified Davis as vice president and general manager of the IoT Group. It also put the business in the context of Intel’s growth plans, with two company projections:

Figure What Intel said it represented
$2.1 billion Intel’s forecast for IoT Group revenue in 2014
$11–13 billion Intel’s projected serviceable addressable market for 2015

These were forecasts in an investor presentation, not actual revenue or independently audited market outcomes established here. The presentation is Intel Investor Meeting 2014, filed with the SEC on November 20, 2014.

What Intel’s later filings say about IoT

Intel’s 2020 Form 10-K described IOTG as developing high-performance compute platforms for vertical industries and embedded markets. The filing named retail, manufacturing, health and life sciences, government, and education as examples. This is a dated snapshot of the group’s remit in that reporting period; it does not establish the status of Intel’s organization in 2026. The filing is available through Intel’s 2020 Form 10-K, filed in 2021.
