The Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 is a 2009-era, 2.66 GHz LGA775 processor specified for a 1333 MHz bus and 95 W TDP. It was positioned as an affordable quad-core option when new; today, its practical value depends on whether you are maintaining a compatible legacy PC, not on its original price positioning. The specifications below are documented by Intel, while this retrospective does not claim current benchmark results or hands-on testing.

What the Q8400 was designed to be

Intel added the Q8400 and Q8400S to its processor specification update on April 20, 2009. The update’s revision history records a correction on May 13, 2009, clarifying Intel VT support. Those dates establish when the models entered the document and when its notes changed; they are not performance measurements. Intel’s December 2011 specification update is the source for the model information.

HotHardware’s review, published June 22, 2009, presented the Q8400 as an affordable Core 2 Quad in the context of the Q9400 and contemporary AMD mainstream processors. That is useful for understanding the chip’s launch-era role, but it does not establish present-day value or how it performs in current applications. HotHardware’s Q8400 review provides the period context.

Intel’s earlier Q6600 launch release described quad-core processors as suited to processor-intensive, highly threaded work and running demanding applications simultaneously. That was Intel’s broad rationale for quad core, not a Q8400 benchmark or a guarantee that every program would benefit. Intel’s Q6600-era launch release is relevant only as historical context.

Q8400 specifications

Specification Q8400 Qualification
Clock frequency 2.66 GHz Intel specification update, dated December 2011
Bus speed 1333 MHz Intel specification update, dated December 2011
Package 775-land LGA (LGA775) Intel specification update, dated December 2011
Thermal design power (TDP) 95 W Associated with the Q8400 identification row in Intel’s specification update, dated December 2011

These are manufacturer specifications, not a measure of how quickly the processor handles a particular workload today. The available evidence does not establish a Q8400-specific benchmark figure for current software.

Will a Q8400 work in your motherboard?

Not necessarily. Matching the processor’s LGA775 package is not enough to confirm that a board supports it. Motherboard model, chipset and BIOS requirements can affect support, and there is no board-wide compatibility conclusion that applies to all LGA775 systems.

  1. Find the exact motherboard model and hardware revision, using the board’s label, documentation, or firmware setup.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s CPU support list for that exact model and revision. Confirm that it names the Core 2 Quad Q8400.
  3. Check the listed minimum BIOS version and compare it with the BIOS currently installed. If an update is required, follow the board maker’s instructions before removing the working processor.
  4. Confirm the board’s stated processor and cooling requirements, then ensure the system’s cooler and power delivery are suitable for the Q8400’s documented 95 W TDP.
  5. If the system fails to boot after an upgrade, reinstall the previous supported CPU if available, verify the BIOS version and processor seating, and consult the board maker’s support guidance.

Compatibility questions such as a black screen after installation do not, by themselves, show that the Q8400 has a general defect. Without the exact motherboard and BIOS details, the cause cannot be determined.

Is the Q8400 a worthwhile upgrade now?

It can make sense as a part for restoring or extending a legacy LGA775 system when the motherboard explicitly supports it and the rest of the platform is already in place. The 2009 description of the Q8400 as affordable does not say whether it is a good purchase today. Current price, availability, comparable benchmark results and the cost of a suitable replacement platform are not established here.

  • Model: SLGT6
  • Socket: LGA775

  • Frequency: 2.667 GHz

When comparing it with another processor, evaluate the complete system rather than counting cores alone:

  • Verify exact motherboard and BIOS support for each candidate.
  • Consider per-core speed and the software’s workload behavior, not just core count.
  • Compare cache and bus specifications where documented.
  • Account for power and cooling requirements.
  • Include the total platform cost and actual availability in the decision.

For a new build or a substantial upgrade, the Q8400’s legacy platform is a reason to compare the cost of replacing the wider system, not just the price of the processor. No current alternative is ranked here because comparable performance, pricing and availability have not been verified.
