Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Canon LBP2900B is an older USB laser printer, and Canon does not currently list Windows 11 as a supported operating system for its available 64-bit driver. The latest Canon package is LBP2900/2900B CAPT Printer Driver (R1.50 Ver.3.30), released on February 14, 2017. It lists Windows 10 x64 as its newest supported Windows client version, so installation on Windows 11 is a compatibility workaround rather than an officially verified Windows 11 setup.
That said, many Windows 11 PCs can still use the printer with Canon’s 64-bit CAPT package if the installation order is followed carefully. The most important detail is to keep the USB cable disconnected until the installer asks you to connect and power on the printer.
Before you begin
Check these points before downloading anything:
- You have the Canon LASER SHOT LBP2900 or LBP2900B.
- Your PC runs 64-bit Windows 11 on an Intel or AMD processor, unless you are prepared to use Windows’ built-in printer discovery instead of Canon’s installer.
- You have administrator access to the computer.
- The printer can connect directly to the PC with a suitable USB cable.
Canon’s current driver page lists the following package:
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Driver | LBP2900/2900B CAPT Printer Driver |
| Version | R1.50 Ver.3.30 |
| Download file | LBP2900_R150_V330_W64_uk_EN_2.exe |
| Size | 10.93 MB |
| Canon page date | February 14, 2017 |
| Newest listed Windows client | Windows 10 (64-bit) |
Download it from Canon’s support page for the LBP2900/2900B CAPT Printer Driver. Avoid third-party driver-download sites, which may bundle unrelated software or provide altered files.

- FAST PRINT SPEEDS: Print up to 19 pages per minute.
- COMPACT DESIGN: Space-saving, compact design fits anywhere in your home, school or small office.
- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Print from almost anywhere in your workspace using your compatible mobile device.
- PAPER CAPACITY: Up to 150 sheets.
- SUSTAINABILITY: Uses less than 2 watts in Energy Saver mode.
Important: disconnect the printer first
Turn the printer off and unplug its USB cable from the computer before starting. Do not connect it simply because Windows is already showing an “Add device” prompt.
Canon’s installation instructions specifically require the USB cable to be disconnected before setup. If Windows detects the printer too early, it can install an incomplete or incorrect entry and the Canon installer may fail to detect the device later.
Install the Canon LBP2900B driver
- Download the driver. Save
LBP2900_R150_V330_W64_uk_EN_2.exeto a convenient location such as Downloads. - Run the downloaded file. Double-click the self-extracting EXE. It will decompress the driver files into a new folder with the same name, or a similarly named folder.
- Open the extracted folder. Do not run the original download again. Open the new folder and double-click
Setup.exe. - Start the installer. If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes if you trust that the file came from Canon’s support page.
- Confirm the language. Choose the appropriate language and select Yes when prompted to continue.
- Continue through the setup screens. Select Next, read the license terms, choose I accept the terms in the license agreement, and continue.
- Choose the connection type. Select Install Printer Driver through a USB Connection. Make sure the USB-connection option is selected, then choose Next.
- Confirm the installation. If the installer says
Installation cannot be stopped once it starts. Do you want to continue?, select Yes. - Connect the printer only when instructed. When the installer displays the instruction, connect the USB cable directly to the computer and turn on the LBP2900B. The USB class driver and printer driver should then install automatically.
- Finish and restart. Select Restart my computer now, then click Exit. Save open work before allowing Windows to restart.
Keep the printer connected directly to the PC during this process. Canon warns that USB hubs, print servers, and switching devices that depend on unidirectional communication can cause problems because the printer uses bidirectional communication.
Check whether Windows 11 added the printer
After restarting, open:
Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners

If Windows does not find the printer
On the Printers & scanners page, select Add device under Add a printer & scanner. Allow Windows a moment to search.
If the printer does not appear, select The printer that I want isn’t listed, then choose Add a new device manually. This opens the Windows Add Printer window, where you can follow the manual-add options.
Before adding another entry, check that:
- The printer is switched on and has no error light or paper error.
- The USB cable is firmly connected at both ends.
- The cable is connected directly to the PC rather than through a hub, dock, print server, or switch.
- You are using a suitable USB cable. A damaged cable or an unsuitable adapter can prevent detection.
- You did not connect the printer before starting Canon’s driver installation.
Use Windows Update when the printer shows “Find drivers”
Windows may display the printer but show Find drivers beside it. In that state, the printer may work with limited capabilities, but Windows has not installed a complete driver.
Select Find drivers and allow Windows Update to search. Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the preferred source for printer drivers. If Windows offers a matching driver, install it and then print a test page.
Manually add a legacy driver through Printer server properties
If the Canon installer does not work but you want to make a driver available to Windows, you can use the legacy driver wizard:
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Scroll to Related settings and select Printer server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab and select Add….
- In Add Printer Driver Wizard, select Next >.
- Choose the processor architecture used by the printer driver, then select Next >.
- Select Windows Update and wait for the manufacturer and model list to load.
- Choose the appropriate manufacturer and model, select Next >, and then select Finish.
This wizard only adds a driver to the Windows driver store. It does not create a printer entry or connect the LBP2900B. Afterward, return to Printers & scanners and add the printer separately.

What to do on an ARM-based Windows 11 PC
Canon’s installer was designed for older x64 Windows systems. Microsoft warns that manufacturer-provided printer installers may fail on ARM-based Windows PCs.
To check your processor type, open Start > Settings > System > About and inspect Device specifications > System type. If it says ARM-based processor, prefer Windows’ built-in installation route:
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Connect and power on the printer only when using the Windows discovery process, unless Windows gives different instructions.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and allow Windows Update to obtain a compatible driver.
If the LBP2900B is not supported by the available ARM driver, a separate Windows PC with an x64 processor may be required for reliable use.
Common problems and fixes
The installer cannot detect the printer
Disconnect the USB cable, cancel the installer, restart Windows, and begin again. Start Setup.exe with the printer disconnected. Connect the cable only when the installer asks you to do so. Also try a different USB port and remove any hub or docking station from the connection.
Windows installed the printer before Canon setup
Open Printers & scanners and check whether the LBP2900B is already listed. If it is, try printing a test page first. If it only has limited functionality or shows Find drivers, use Windows Update or remove the incomplete entry and repeat Canon’s installation sequence with the USB cable disconnected at the start.
The printer appears offline
Confirm that the printer is powered on and connected directly to the PC. Open its printer page in Windows, inspect the queue, and clear paused or stuck jobs. Reconnecting the USB cable after restarting both the PC and printer can also refresh the connection.

- Wireless, monochrome duplex printer (print only)
- Print up to 35 pages per minute
- Uses Toner 072 / 072 high-capacity toner
- 250-sheet standard cassette
- Print on-the-go with Canon PRINT app, Apple Airprint, Mopria Print Service
Printing works but features are missing
This can happen when Windows uses a generic or incomplete driver. Select Find drivers if it is available, run Windows Update, or retry the Canon CAPT package. Because Windows 11 is not listed by Canon for this package, some compatibility limitations may remain.
The printer works through a hub but fails intermittently
Move the cable to a USB port on the computer. Canon’s documentation identifies hubs, print servers, and switching devices as possible causes of faulty operation. The LBP2900B’s USB interface specification does not guarantee compatibility with every modern hub, adapter, or dock.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is there a Windows 11-specific LBP2900B driver?
Canon’s current support listing does not provide a Windows 11-specific LBP2900B driver. The available 64-bit package is the R1.50 Ver.3.30 driver dated February 14, 2017, and its listed Windows client support ends at Windows 10 x64.
Therefore, treat successful Windows 11 installation as dependent on the particular PC, USB controller, and Windows build. If the printer is mission-critical and the Canon package remains unreliable, consider using it from a supported older Windows system or replacing it with a printer that has current Windows 11 support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why older installation guides can be confusing
Many older instructions begin with Start > Devices and Printers. That is not the current primary Windows 11 path. Use Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners for normal installation and printer management.
The older control-panel tools are still relevant in specific cases, such as opening Printer server properties and adding a legacy driver, but adding a driver there is separate from creating the printer itself.

FAQ
Does Canon officially support the LBP2900B on Windows 11?
Canon’s current 64-bit driver page does not list Windows 11. It lists Windows 10 x64 and older Windows versions, so Canon does not currently make a verified Windows 11 support claim for this package.
Which file should I download for a 64-bit Windows PC?
Download Canon’s LBP2900_R150_V330_W64_uk_EN_2.exe, listed as the LBP2900/2900B CAPT Printer Driver R1.50 Ver.3.30. The file is approximately 10.93 MB.
Should I connect the USB cable before installing the driver?
No. Turn the printer off and disconnect the USB cable before starting. Connect it and power on the printer only when Canon’s installer asks you to do so.
Can I install the driver from Command Prompt?
Canon’s current instructions do not provide a command-line installation command. The documented process uses the downloaded self-extracting EXE, the extracted Setup.exe, and the graphical installer.
Why does the Add Printer Driver Wizard not make the printer appear?
The wizard only adds a driver to Windows. It does not create a printer or configure its USB connection. Add the printer afterward through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
What if my Windows 11 computer uses an ARM processor?
Microsoft warns that manufacturer installers may fail on ARM PCs. Check Settings > System > About > Device specifications > System type; if it says ARM-based processor, use Windows’ Printers & scanners > Add device workflow first.
The Bottom Line
Install the Canon LBP2900B package with the printer disconnected, run the extracted Setup.exe, and connect the USB cable only when prompted. Then check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. The procedure can work on some Windows 11 x64 systems, but Canon’s current listing does not officially include Windows 11, so compatibility is not guaranteed.
