First check whether Homebrew currently offers an installable wkhtmltopdf formula: run brew update, then brew info wkhtmltopdf. If Homebrew reports an installable formula, follow the command it shows. If it reports that the formula is missing, deprecated, or disabled, repeating brew install wkhtmltopdf will not solve that lifecycle issue. Current formula availability was not confirmed when checked on October 3, 2026, so this guide avoids promising that the install command will work.
Check your Homebrew installation and formula status
Open Terminal and check that the Homebrew installation on your shell’s PATH matches your Mac’s architecture. Homebrew’s documented default prefix is /opt/homebrew on Apple Silicon and /usr/local on Intel Macs. If you have both Apple Silicon and Rosetta/Intel installations, the wrong one on PATH can make a valid package appear unavailable or install for an architecture you did not intend. See Homebrew’s installation guidance.
- Refresh Homebrew’s metadata:
brew update. - Ask Homebrew about the formula:
brew info wkhtmltopdf. - If the output identifies an installable formula, use the install command Homebrew currently documents. If it reports no formula or a lifecycle status, follow the relevant section below instead of assuming the package can be installed.
Homebrew’s formula page could not be accessed during the October 3, 2026 check, and the expected current core formula path returned 404. Those checks do not establish that no alternate or local formula exists; the command-line result on your machine is the practical first check. The relevant lookup locations are Homebrew’s formula page and the expected Homebrew Core formula path.
Install only if Homebrew reports an installable formula
If brew info wkhtmltopdf shows a current installable formula, run the install command Homebrew shows. Then verify whether the executable is available:

wkhtmltopdf --version
A version response confirms that the shell can find an executable; it does not by itself confirm compatibility with every current macOS release or prove that the project is maintained. If Homebrew says the formula is deprecated, disabled, or absent, use the lifecycle guidance below rather than treating a failed install as a shell problem.
Understand Homebrew’s formula lifecycle messages
Homebrew distinguishes among formula states. Its lifecycle documentation and FAQ explain these states; brew info can provide details about deprecated or disabled formulae.

- Deprecated: Homebrew marks a package as no longer recommended. Depending on its state, an action may still proceed; read the warning and details shown by
brew info. - Disabled: Homebrew blocks installation of the formula. Re-running the same install command does not change that status.
- Removed or unavailable: The package is not available through that repository’s current formula listing. Check the live catalog and consider the official upstream installer only if its legacy status and compatibility limitations suit your use.
Check the upstream macOS installer as a legacy fallback
The official wkhtmltopdf downloads page lists version 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, and a 64-bit macOS installer listing for macOS 10.7 or later. These are upstream listing details, not confirmation that the installer works on current macOS, runs natively on Apple Silicon, or receives ongoing maintenance. The project repository is archived and read-only. No current compatibility guarantee or tested installation procedure is established here, so review the official download information for your system before proceeding; do not assume an old minimum-version listing ensures support on a modern Mac.
| Route | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Homebrew formula, if available | Availability was not confirmed in the October 3, 2026 check. Homebrew distinguishes formula lifecycle states and exposes details through brew info. |
Run brew update and brew info wkhtmltopdf; use the command Homebrew currently documents only if it reports an installable formula. |
| Official upstream macOS installer | The project lists a 64-bit macOS installer and version 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020. The repository is archived. | Assess current macOS and CPU compatibility yourself; the listing is not a current support guarantee. |
Know the build and security requirements
Developer tools are not a universal prerequisite
Homebrew says source builds require Xcode or the Xcode Command Line Tools. On Apple Silicon, bottles and casks can be installed without developer tools, so do not install Xcode preemptively just to try an available binary package. Intel macOS is a Tier 3 Homebrew configuration; that support tier concerns Homebrew’s host environment and does not guarantee that a particular formula works on every Intel Mac. See Homebrew’s macOS requirements and installation guidance.

Treat untrusted HTML as a security risk
The wkhtmltopdf downloads page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” This matters especially when a web application or server converts content supplied by users. Sanitize untrusted HTML and JavaScript before conversion, and consider whether an archived project is suitable for a new system.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
brew: command not found: The shell may not have Homebrew’s environment configured. The Homebrew installer directs users to add thebrew shellenvcommand for the actual installation prefix to their shell startup configuration. Use/opt/homebrewfor the documented Apple Silicon default or/usr/localfor the Intel default; do not copy the other architecture’s path blindly. See the installation instructions. No available formula: Refresh metadata and runbrew info wkhtmltopdf. If it remains unavailable, the current Homebrew catalog may not provide it. The formula lookups checked on October 3, 2026 were inconclusive, so do not infer that every possible tap or local formula is absent.- Deprecated or disabled warning: Read the status and explanation from
brew info wkhtmltopdf. Deprecation and disabling have different effects; a disabled formula cannot be installed through the ordinary formula path. - Download or network error: Capture the actual error before changing settings. A download failure is different from a missing formula; the available evidence does not establish a wkhtmltopdf-specific network fix.
- Architecture or macOS compatibility error: Check which Homebrew prefix is on
PATHand whether you are using Apple Silicon or Intel. The upstream installer’s macOS listing is old and does not establish support for your current macOS release or native Apple Silicon operation. - Source-build error: If Homebrew is building from source, install Xcode or the Xcode Command Line Tools as Homebrew specifies. This is not a prerequisite for every bottle or cask installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the old macOS minimum on the wkhtmltopdf download page mean it supports my current Mac?
No. The page’s macOS 10.7-or-later listing is not a current compatibility guarantee, and it does not establish native Apple Silicon support.
Does installing Homebrew require Xcode?
Not for every package install. Homebrew requires developer tools for source builds, while Apple Silicon users can install bottles and casks without them.
